Pre season optimism is fast dissolving after four confidence draining and ineffective performances.
Another set of young green players who have the potential to succeed at this level or have their careers set back as they try and find enough form to satisfy the manager and supporters.
Problem is neither management or supporters have the patience to wait for these gems to find enough form and subsequently has the potential to drop off further as negative results drain fragile confidence.
GJ has a tough job on his hands and needs to get the balance right but has little room for maneuver now these players are contracted. Anyone notice in interview he held back and said "If the don't find their form they wont be in the team? A tad short of saying they will be off asap. I get the feeling he's played virtually all his cards in the transfer market and will have to make the best of a bad job.
To me this doesn't look like a GJ side whatsoever.
When he arrived at the club he had a very good foundation to work with that only needed tactically tweaking and a couple of new additions with no baggage. GJ was a breath of fresh air after Garry Owers who to his credit brought in some pretty decent players but had no idea how to motivate or set up a winning side.
GJ immediately adopted a high energy pressing game that transformed our fortunes and performances.
Where's it gone?
When you consider how quickly GJ identified and signed the likes of Saiko Jenah, Opie Edwards Kalvin Kalala etc all dangerous players and transformed Jamie Reid into a regular dangerous goal scorer you wonder why and where its all now gone so pear shaped. Its been a slow and failing process over the last 15 months after our play off defeat.
Wev'e built sound foundations only for them to crumble away. Some very good players for this level have been and gone, one after one they all decided to move on to pastures new. Ried, Kalala, McDonald, Covalan, Cameron, Nemane, Whitfield, Lewis, CLE, Little and surprisingly for me Ben Wynter. I would have any one of them back over the current crop.
All quality players who were comfortable at this level but for whatever reason decided their future wasn't here.
How the hell can you build a challenging winning team when you best players constantly move on?
What we are witnessing now see no is the result of a club totally unable to build a side that will seriously challenge the best in this division.
Can we afford to wait for young unproven players who will get bullied week in week out to develop? Time will tell i Guess I've seen no signs yet but in all honesty what did we expect?
We now have a pretty big squad full of potential and a couple of old heads nearing the end of their careers but thank goodness for Dean Moxey we would be in a truly dire position without his performances already. Asa Hall is never going to be 100% fit again and despite his intelligent footballing brain and will continue to slow down.
He would be first choice even now and that says alot about the quality of players we've signed.
I was totally gutted to see yet another exodus of our core talent but after last seasons signing debacle had hoped the manager would be able to identify worthy replacements. It appears nothing much has changed and little will alter in the future.
We may be fortunate enough to unearth a decent footballer or two in the future but it will all be pretty pointless once they decide to move on which is pretty frustrating for supporters.
Still, lets all hope the virtually unseen Jarvis will be the new Harry Kane of non league and change the course of our fortunes!
