Lapslie and Jarvis not fit so Evans, Andrews and Goodwin all start.McGavin will play a bit deeper to accommodate Evans in the hole. Unfit Asa Hall making up the numbers on the bench along with Ashley Nathaniel-George - a winger from Southend apparently. Team sheetNathaniel George in squad

Still unsure of our strike force, so would imagine a 0 - something score line. 😏 Well that didn’t take a lot of figuring out did it! You can talk about putting this player here and playing that player there, but it’s all a load of nonsense. You could turn the team sheet on its head, ie, the keeper up front and our centre forward (if we actually have one) in goal, and it would make absolutely no difference! There’s only one thing to do (play) but it will never happen…I would tell you but I don’t want Merse fainting in his directors box again. 😵💫

Came away feeling very underwhelmed with the game and some of the supporters stood in front of us.
At least I’ll be larging it up in Cardiff tomorrow night 🍺 🍕

Tough game today against a big strong physical side in hot conditions where injuries both before and during the game meant we were not at our best but luckily neither were Oldham and think we can be pleased with a draw.
In my opening post I pondered whether Hanson or Evans would get the final place but as it happened, Lapslie had picked up another niggle against Truro and they both started. The pitch looked in fantastic condition being well watered prior to kickoff to such an extent that quite a few players slipped during the first 10 minutes. We got off to a good start with Goodwin having 2 chances, first hitting the bar after just 3 minutes following Omar heading the ball back across goal from a free kick and then having a relatively weak shot from the edge of the penalty area which was easily saved. Andrews had a chance stretching from close range but only managed to poke wide of the post getting kneed in the process by their keeper hurting his hip/kidney area, after treatment tried to carry on but eventually had to be subbed.
This meant a relatively early introduction for Koszela who unfortunately was not on the same wavelength as Goodwin and I can only recall a relatively weak shot hit just to the left of the post early on in the second half as a meaningful contribution. Oldham started to get back into the match and exert a degree of control causing our defence problems with Crowe guilty of not dealing first time with a long ball forward to let their forward in and Omar was very lucky not to get a straight red after tussling with their forward for the ball which got behind them and who was then seemed to be checked by Ali as he tried to go past him although there was a degree of him also running into Omar with the ref possibly giving him the benefit of the doubt only brandishing a yellow but strictly speaking, if it was adjudged to be a foul, he was also the last man……
Halstead made a good save when called upon with the defence also having to mother the goal at times. Evans had struggled to get in the game in the first half and seem to be kicked about quite a bit, possibly being targeted as a danger man to the extent was unable to resume in the second half with new signing Nathaniel-George coming on. While the players tried their best, it was noticeable that we were unable to create the same sort of chances in the first quarter of the match during the second half with Goodwin leading the line very well but also visibly tiring.
For the last 15 minutes Hall was brought on to replace Koszela but with so little match practice also contributed very little. Oldham certainly forgot to pack their shooting boots today as more chances for them started to mount up, Omar again poorly defended a ball bouncing off his legs straight to their forward who narrowly shot wide from the edge of the area. Wyatt’s back pass just saw Halstead get to the ball first before taking out their forward to loud appeals for a penalty from the away support behind him.
The Oldham substitute striker, number 20, Fondop, caused quite a few problems for us and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start for them going forward. We had some relief after Gardner picked up a second yellow after Moxey went past him and was hacked down for his troubles. While we had a brief period of numerical superiority this was literally brought crashing back to parity after Omar had clashed heads with their striker, he gave the impression of being punch drunk, playing no further part in the match and I saw in Johnson’s post match interview that he needed to go to hospital after the game and hope he recovers quickly. You are looking at 7 - 10 days out from a concussion, possibly longer, I did wonder briefly if there was a concussion substitute protocol for the National League as we had used all our subs by then but the non appearance of Tomlinson answered my question.
So a lot going on in this game with injuries foremost a concern and no wonder Johnson talked about bringing in some more additions at the end. Somehow only 3 mins of injury time given despite lengthy injuries and lots of substitutions?

I didn’t think much of Oldham. Last season we played Grimsby just after they had come down and they looked superb and yet only just snuck a play-off place in the end. Oldham weren’t anything like Grimsby but in the end I thought a point was a fair result.
Saying that, we so badly missed CLE, Little and Lewis and our defence and forward line worry me most as I thought McGavin had a great game and is probably going to end up being our key player. Well done too, Mark Halstead. I thought he looked assured and solid and I hope he can build on this.

Assume Tomlinson will come in for Omar next week-though Hall could play as a central defender too.
Will be short of forwards if Andrews out and squad already very stretched, with up to seven players out next week. Not sure Kozela will be given another chance next week, so maybe another loanee to come in.
With concussion , Omar might only be missing one game and would hope Lapslie could be back next week-thought we missed his tenaciousness and ability to break-up the oppositions attacks on Saturday.
Didn't realise Kai Hepworth had gone to Yeovil-the physio/fitness/conditioning situation remains a concern.

Injuries Injuries and more bloody injuries...... Not good and you have to ask why we suffer so much and have done in recent seasons.
The management demands a high tempo hard working and committed squad that undoubtedly get pushed hard in training and are expected to give no less than 100% on match days. Unfortunately not all players at our level are top level natural athletes and the weaker ones will continue to pick niggles and longer term injuries that impinge on team consistency.
Tom Lapslie is a clear example of a great little player who has struggled with injuries and fitness. His committed style of play makes him vulnerable and like many others especially the younger ones want to "please" the management team and give there all but we're not all made the same. If you compare Ben Wynter for example, who never missed a game through injury to many others, physicality and natural strength vary enormously and each individual player has to be judged accordingly. You have to ask yourself if we can afford to carry players who will be missing for much of the campaign or do we try and manage them better? We did it with Jason Fowler, a player who would have graced pitches at a much higher level "IF" he could have stayed fit an healthy. One game he played in stood out for me against Palace in a cup game - he simply gave everything and completely ran the show. While we lost narrowly without doubt he was a class or three above anyone on the pitch. He gave so much in that game he hardly played again that season! We need a squad fit healthy in body and mind if we have any hope of progressing and not putting their body in jeopardy by being pushed to hard in training with a fitness plan for each individual
Catch22. We all want players to give their all in every game but there will be a cost. The top athletes with the best technical ability are playing in the top divisions. There are undoubtedly technically gifted players down the divisions who simply cant play half the games in a season because of being prone to knocks and strains.
I can only hope we haven't signed too many "shrinking violets" as GJ would say but then again the odd shrinking violet that stays fit may be beneficial!

Great to see a "flair" player join the ranks in ASHLEY NATHANIEL-GEORGE. The incoming midfielders all look to be of a similar type and we need some variety in our attacking play. Well thought of at his previous clubs Crawley and Southend but limited appearances through illness and injury... GAWD!.
Hopefully a player who can put defenders on their arse and score a few a much missed feature since the departures of various players who could entertain. Nemane, Whitfield and Kalvin Kalala, come to mind Kalala I enjoyed particularly who had the ability but didn't get on with the manager. All were players to entertain and get at defenders in the box.
Ali Omar still looks a weak link to me I hope he can improve and get his concentration and decision making levels up to scratch. nerlay gifted them one or two and Crowe also dwelled and was robbed. We were fortunate to get away with it on Saturday that wont always be the case. Consistency is key as they say and hate to think what the score would have been if Moxie had been absent. A hot day an untidy and frustrating day but pointless making judgments just yet

Ben Wynter was out for months a couple of seasons ago and even when he did come back, it took a long, long time for him to look anything like he had done before the injury. Injuries have been a real concern for us since we got promoted from the NLS; we seem to have suffered ridiculous levels of injury and it arguably cost us the title in 2021. How much that did or did not have to do with our newly departed physio remains to be seen (and perhaps Yeovil will be worth watching in the meantime). Hopefully, the newly appointed physio will be decent and Plymouth Parkway’s loss will be our gain.

Surely you got my drift though Hector. Yes Ben was out long term with an injury a couple of seasons back but recovered well eventually and hadn't been out every other week like some. I believe he played every game last term. Now we have another batch to judge and see how they cope with the week in week out rigours of professional football. Some will and others wont and you can almost guarantee Tom Lapslie, Asa Hall etc despite being first choice names on the team sheet will be injured more often than not.
Just read that Jarvis who had more or less recovered last week before getting another knock in the same place in training and will be out again this week.
Blaming physios for injury problems - sorry I don't get that its surely management and player honesty with the state of their injury that counts and not trying to please the managment team by saying I think I'll be fine. Something has to change. Plenty of players have paid the price - Little came back too soon and wasn't ready. Whitfield played on in a match with a knee injury which meant he became long term and never played for us again and Nemane broke his bloody foot in training. Wright brought back too soon after a bad Hamsrtring injury. The list goes on I dont believe its just bad luck after three seasons of this and nothing seems to have changed. I can only hope the new physio isn't a yes man, is honest with injury appraisals and is listend to by management.

We started really brightly with Goodwin prominent but after Andrews went off we did nothing.
Koszela had a chance to look the part but did not take it.
Crowe and Wyatt will have to push up more if we are to use 3-5-2 as an attacking formation.
Midfield was Hanson holding with both Evans (to the right) and McGavin (to the left) ahead of him. I thought that meant that neither had the freedom to push up to join the front two but neither really helped Hanson hold the fort either. Would prefer a solid two with one in front. McGavin could play in the two or as the one.
Halstead did o.k. Let's hope his confidence holds.
Moxey man of the match by a mile. He is pure class and could probably play a central defensive role until he is 40. You don't need to run around so much when you can read the game like he can. Omar needs someone like Moxey beside him - he has a lot to learn and there is nobody better to learn from.
Nathaniel-George came on as a straight swap for Evans in midfield but pushed up front when Hall replaced Koszela. Seems his best position is as a winger, so that may open up the 4-4-2 option for us. Let's hope he works out better than previous promising winger signings Alex Addai, Byron Moore and Opi Edwards who all seemed to sign on a "we'll pay them while they get fit and then they buggar off" basis.
Was surprised Hall managed as long as he did but disappointed that he replaced a striker - even though Koszela was not achieving much. After the sending off, I hoped we would go for the win by taking off a defender, pushing McGavin up top alongside Goodwin with Koszela and Nathaniel George wide.
I thought it looked a stonewall penalty against Halstead near the end, so on balance we can count ourselves lucky to come out with a point.
Four out injured left us with just 16 to choose from. Of those, Omar must be out on Saturday if he was concussed - he certainly seemed to be as he left the pitch. Andrews and Evans also off through injury. We seemed to turn a blind eye to Crowe struggling for a few minutes. I hope it was one of those knocks you can just run off rather than us ignoring something that will get worse. Last time I hoped that was Byron Moore at Weymouth. He never played again.
Let's hope the new physio plays a blinder and manages to produce 16 fit players for Saturday.
