After the warm glow of a five Goal win on Saturday, the team need to buckle straight back down with a tough away trip at Boreham Wood on Tuesday and hopefully replicate the sustained good form achieved after another five nil win at Hartlepool last year also in October. With Johnson crediting a number of our new players having their best game since joining us (Holman, Martin, O’Connell and Lapslie) I think it is very likely that the same or very similar starting 11 will walk out come Tuesday night barring injury. It probably shows in retrospect that it takes time to bed in and get new players to fit in and know what is to be expected of them in the Johnson game plan. Our bench was stretched thin on Saturday and it would be good if either Chiori Johnson and Addai are match fit in time.
Boreham Wood have had a very good start and they’re actually only two points off the top of the table sitting in fourth place. You could argue that their start of Weymouth Dover and Aldershot were not the most challenging but they are where they are for a reason and only have the one defeat away to Solihull Moors. Their forward line of Tyrone Marsh and Scott Bowden will be familiar to many gulls fans and hopefully our defence can Marshall them effectively.

link - Not surprisingly same team as on Saturday starts although Chiori replaces Rogers on the bench.

I shall be keeping one eye on the Woking result following their thrashing of us and Notts County. They seem to have found a guy who is banging them in.

Sounds like we had that coming.
Let's hope GJ shakes them up at half-time.

All to do after Boreham Wood put together a really nice passing move to score a really good goal.

All to do after Boreham Wood put together a really nice passing move to score a really good goal. Normal service resumed - one goal just before and one just after half time ☹️ 2 nil down ⚽️⚽️

Overall I still think that was a better performance than the previous ones I have witnessed v Altrincham, Woking and Grimsby. But we are some way short of a playoff team, and given that we played 3-5-2 yet were consistently overpowered in midfield something went wrong with the tactics. At least this time players seemed to know where each other would be for a pass. After the Solihull game I presumed that the players GK thought were not up to this level were the new recruits. I'm not sure now. Based on last night's performance I have reconsidered my view of Dan Martin - I thought he had a good game. Lapslie was the best Gull on the park, although Holman also impressed me with his nippiness, layoffs and close control. He didn't have many chances in the box due to us still playing too many long-balls rather than playing along the ground which we did more of in the second half. O'Connell concerns me at right wing/midfield. Although his defending has improved he offers very little going forward, or certainly didn't last night. Whitfield may be an unfair comparison, yet Whitfield frightened defences whereas I don't think they are too bothered by O'Connell. The player I thought gave the worst performance was CLE. A peripheral figure in the first half, except when he swung one leg and booted the ball out with his other foot when in a god position inside the penalty box, he came more into the game in the second half but failed to create very much at all. Most of his actions were to fall over at the first sign of contact. His tumblings are becoming embarrassing, so if a rose-tinted Gulls fan can see that what must refs be thinking? From one of our best players last season to the opposite this season something more fundamental than fitness must be the cause. Chiori Johnson was alright when he came on but didn't offer much threat to the opposition. That said he was often in fairly open positions waiting for a pass that never arrived, mostly because Little decided to hold the ball too long rather than move it forward at speed. I don't know what to think about Little. Whenever I've had enough of his wasted play, he has a blinder of a game that reminds me what he is capable of. So far, he has been too inconsistent to be effective for us this season. We played some lovely football in the second half, just not enough of it. I couldn't really work out if a 2-0 win flattered Boreham Wood or if they were playing in second gear for most of the second half. They had enough chances to score five or six, but their shooting was horribly wayward. We had fewer chances with equally wayward finishing. At half time I though both sides were even, with just one moment of great skill separating them. That all went horribly wrong almost immediately after the start of the second half. It wasn't an exciting game and we were never really out of it; how much that is down to BW not having to try too hard to keep a two-goal lead we will never know. Would two very late goals in Gary-Time have papered over the cracks in the same way as the Chesterfield game? Ben Wynter had a good game, and Moxey was a class (or two) above. Good to see Andrews on the bench although we could do with him on the pitch, if only for corners and free kicks...

Overall I still think that was a better performance than the previous ones I have witnessed v Altrincham, Woking and Grimsby. Damning with faint praise.... Thanks for the report Rags. A lot of that ties up with what I have seen at Plainmoor. Three at the back is great when we are on the front foot and keep the wing backs pushed up, but not sure I like it in games we are less likely to dominate. Always knew these were two very tough away games. Not surprised we lost at BW and we will need a very good performance to avoid the same at Bromley. Slowly creeping up the table and trying to keep alive a chance of scraping seventh is far more likely than storming into the title race. I like to think it is also far more likely than slipping into a relegation scrap. 4-2-3-1 with Addai and Andrews wide is what I'd like to see.
