spoke to joe barlow today ,the skin on his drum is looking sad tired and ripped and just dont sound right.
compare that to the blackpool drummer ,now he could play ,and i enjoyed listening to that.
now do you think we should help joe to re-skin his drum, and provide lessons ,would having a good drummer with a good sounding drum realy help the atomsphere at league games , which today was electric ,but i fear will return to normal at the next league game.

As I said in my match report, the drummer in the away end was first class. I would say one of the best I have heard at any game. I think it helps having two drum sticks, sure Joe only has one and while he tries hard, the drum does sound a bit sad.
We proved that while having a drum is fine, that just getting more of the popside singing, will make the atmosphere so much better. You could even hear the singing in the family stand today, the more that joins in the better.
One problem that we still have and will not help get people to sing is the choice of songs. A few times today the same nutters starting singing the ref is a C***, as only a few joined in, thankfully it died its proper death.
Sing songs without swear words in and people like myself will join in with the singing, I refuse to subject those near to me , with me singing at the top of my voice who the F***ing hell are you.
Yes Joe needs a new drum and needs someone to help him play it better, there must be a drummer in a local band who could give him a few hours of their time.

One of the many for instances where size does matter.

Scott even I was singing my heart out today, as I have got older I have sung less and less, but today it was one of those days and it felt right to sing away. Had a tear in my eye at the end as well, but then thats what I'm like ;D

No shame in that Dave.
God knows what you all felt at the ground - I was wondering if my heart could beat much faster than it did at the end!!
No nails left either - but we are through, and thats what counts!!

Personally, I feel that a drum is a posistive thing to have. It without doubt increases the atmosphere at a game and anyone who heard Aldershot last season can vouch for the fact that a good drummer keep a crowd making noise when the game may not be going your way. As for our own drummer, I can only say that keep doing what you are doing Joe. There will always be people knocking you, but take it from me, having the drum always creates a better atmosphere. Please bear in mind though, that I don't stand next to you!! He he.

Steve I admire Joe for taking a drum and giving it a good go at getting some rhythm and beat going. Joe knows his drum is getting worn out and I really believe with a better drum and just some teaching, he could make a first class drummer for us.

Absolutely Dave. Maybe Joe could ask the trust if they would make a contribution to mending his drum.......
As for lessons, i'm sure there must be someone who supports Torquay United who plays in a band. Maybe he could try Torbay Brass band?

Steve I will have a word with Joe and see how much a good second hand drum might cost, sure I can find a way to try and raise a small donation from some on here, we can call it the torquay fans forum drum and all that chip in and sign it.
Must be a good one on ebay that we could get at a good price.Shame I don't know any drummers, I wonder if Jamie knows any.

Thanks Pikey I'm sure we can do something and getting a good drum and played well can only improve things at the ground, we will get Joes views on what would be best and take things from there. Not sure when Joe will be on as he had some sad family news and may be away for a few days.

Now i'm no drum expert, but i've seen marching band bass drums for £100 upwards on the net. Doesn't seem too much if you're serious about creating an atmosphere that counts for every home game.
I do think that a bit of tuition would help though and maybe we should concentrate as much on that as the quality of the actual drum. Having played in a brass band, I'm sure that a percussionist would be able to give excellent guidance on keeping rhythm etc.

Yes I'm serious here, Joe is not a bad lad, he has made some silly mistakes and some things he wished he hadn't done, but as I said I do admire him for trying to make a difference and really hope that we can help to make him into a top drummer for us all.
