Sad to hear that Frank has passed away today at the age of only 72. A great and entertaining player. Who remembers him playing in a Testimonial/Benefit match at Plainmoor ? I cannot remember what teams played(help needed). All I remember that he had not lost his touch and was very entertaining and also had some good banter with the old Popside. Pretty sure I watched and enjoyed in awe Frank's mesmeric skills at Plainmoor late 80's, maybe v Stockport in a league game when he impressed me immensely. One of the greats of the game from the 1960's, my era who played for many top clubs and was a delight to watch. Like Best and Marsh he was a true entertainer, just my type of player.
Awfully sad news, to young - RIP Frank.

I remember him playing for Bolton old boys against us at Wembley before the match. Obviously well after his pomp, but a very flamboyant character on and off the pitch in his prime.

I remember him playing for Bolton old boys against us at Wembley before the match. Obviously well after his pomp, but a very flamboyant character on and off the pitch in his prime. He certainly was. I remember seeing him play at St James Park (not the real one) for Bolton Wanderers in a cup game. Bolton were First Division but fell to a giant killing with Exeter City winning I think 2-1. Cornishman Tony Kellow (also RIP) scored the winner from the penalty spot. I remember that Wembley old boys warm up which I found a bit disappointing. I remember Robin Stubbs getting the ball and I immediately had that thrill of excitement and expectation from those heady days of 1963, but then realised that he clearly wasn't sure what to do next! I would rather they had all just walked around the side of the pitch waving to the crowd rather than go out into the middle with a ball.  |

Memories of hero worshiped players at the peak of their game should remain that way . Always a bit of a shock when you realise they are real people, normal flesh and blood, who age and struggle to move as you remembered them. The Wembley experience I recall as pretty forgettable but was a unique experience seeing so many of my childhood hero's on display for that pre match 20 minute kick about. |
