On the Thames thread I used Simon Inglis's centenary history of the FL for the election ballot figures, so this link is brilliant. Inglis, by the way, mentions Bournemouth United. Looking at the ballot figures you see that clubs such Wigan, Yeovil, Wimbledon, Hereford, Cambridge, Boston and Maidstone persisted in trying to win election before they were eventually successful through election or promotion. I'd forgotten Altrincham (1980) came so close - they really were an aspiring club in those days - and how Kettering polled well in the 1970s (having tried on occasions since 1900). There were other clubs who kept on trying but never got anywhere: Bedford, Romford, Wellington Town/Telford United, Worcester, Chelmsford, Guildford, South Liverpool, Folkestone, Bath City, etc. Following the generally successful expansion of the FL in the 1920s, the two areas where it didn't go so well were the recession-hit areas of South Wales and the North East. This didn't seem to stop post-war applications from Llanelly, Bridgend, Lovell's Athletic and Merthyr; North Shields, South Shields, Ashington, Consett, Annfield Plain and Stockton. There's some pretty small clubs there. I still like the sound of the Argonauts..... Simon Inglis: League Football and the Men Who Made It

For the love of God Barton, how on earth do you store and keep this stuff!!! Space is a problem - especially as I insist on keeping programmes of games I attend (a forty-year habit). I've recently shifted them into large plastic containers I got from Staples. Programmes of matches I've not seen hold little interest - save for a precious few pre-1970 - and I've around 30 Torquay aways (1966-72) and some 1970s FA Cup finals should anybody be interested in them.

I would love to see a thread with the varoios TUFC badges emblem, i may go against the grain but i DID the love plam tree one from 84 ish.. also a thread which hosts the programmes from each year would be good in the future... The admirable centenary history includes plenty of programme covers and, on the cover, features five different club badges. I'm pretty certain the palm tree badge - which accompanied the all-blue "Chelsea" strip - was designed by my old friend from school David Street (also responsible for some of the mid 1970s programme covers). David had been in Norwich since 1975 but kept in touch with Dave Easton, the club secretary. The palm tree aberration can be seen on the programme cover below from 1984/85. It's not my intention to post a series of programme covers but, given recent comment on this site, I couldn't resist the one from 1989/1990 (scroll down).

The palm tree aberration can be seen on the programme cover below from 1984/85. I always thought it resembled a carrot top!
