Result: 1-1 Curle Attendance: 1290 Bruce's last home game in charge. Was it his last, or was he still in charge at Aldershot a week later? Bruce had already gone BEFORE this game. The Colin Anderson incident was the Tuesday before and Rioch resigned at the board meeting held before the match. I assume he was suspended in between. Great thread on all this here: torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/2849/managers-bruce-riochFrank O'Farrell took charge for this game before handing over to Jimmy Hargreaves. I was living in France at the time so missed out on all this. Was the incident and / or the resignation public knowledge before or during this match? Did people think Rioch had gone or think he was just missing through illness or some such reason? Answers on a postcard.....

Fortunate that Dave Carr was just renting not buying a luxury flat as Dave Webb would very quickly get rid of him along with Keith Curle, John Sims and John Turner. Signed for Maidstone and went back to his native Kent for the rest of his life - which was tragically cut short by cancer. www.margatefootballclubhistory.com/davecarr.shtml

Answers on a postcard..... I don't know if this helps but I know exactly what day I heard about the incident. It was the Monday after the match and the reason I remember it is because it was on my birthday. Totally ruined my day.

I expect the club was keen to keep things under wraps in the hope that something could be sorted out. News was slower to spread pre-internet and most of us only knew what was happening when it hit the Herald. I would imagine there would have been a few whispers going around at the Halifax match. Rioch’s absence must have been noticed.

The Sunday Independent article doesn't mention the reason for Rioch's resignation. When I heard of it the following day (ie Monday) I'm pretty sure it was the lunch time Spotlight bulletin and the Anderson incident was mentioned then.

Thanks for that one gullone! So the Indy knew he had quit. There must have been another piece telling more. Did you keep that? Can you remember if you heard anything at Plainmoor Saturday evening, or was it a shock to you when you opened the Indy?

Those Saturday evening home games were always a combination of the game and then down through Torquay town centre calling at a couple of pubs and then on to a club ! I can not remember anything about how i heard at the time. Its a miracle that i have managed to keep the cuttings through lifes twists and turns As you say you had to open the Indy because Torquay were nearly always on the inside page because of a bloody Tommy Tynan headline all over the back !

Glad you did keep hold of the cuttings - really enjoy reading them. Know what you mean about the Janner Indy. That's probably why Plainmoorpete gave it a miss and had to wait for the Herald.

Reading the lineup for this game from later programmes, Colin Barnes came in for Colin Anderson. Taking Barnes' place on the bench was Young.
You might think this was Kevin Young who played four games for us that season, but it wasn't. He had already moved on to Port Vale.
This was Mark who never made a competitive first team appearance for us - but his son did.
TUFC's first YTS intake is worth a thread of its own.
