Continuing my Full League History series: I hope it may conjure up some memories of us missing out on promotion on Goal Average.. and missing out on going up to Div 2.
Ipswich Town : P 22 W5 D8 L9 F30 A37
Of course we also played them in the League Cup home and away in 1987 drawing away and losing 3-0 at home
Also two ties in the Fa Cup: A 4-1 defeat away in 1938 and a 2-0 defeat away in 1946. it was Ipswich who went up instead of us because we didnt get the result we needed at Crystal Palce in 1957 in front of a crowd of 22627.

Excellent Ipswich site, Jon. Our reserve team for those 1936/37 fixtures included Les Lievesley who, as a coach to Torino team, died in the Superga air crash of 1949 which claimed the lives of the members of one of Italy's greatest-ever club teams.

Jon's point about Torquay's reserves playing Ipswich's first team in 1936/37 prompted a little bit of digging. I'd always assumed Ipswich was part of a batch of clubs which joined the Football League in the early 1920s.
Instead, up until 1936, Ipswich was the largest town in the country without a professional football club. Up to 1935 Ipswich Town played in the Southern Amateur League with the likes of Civil Service, Catford Wanderers, Lloyds Bank, Barclays Bank, Midland Bank, Westminster Bank, Ealing Association and the Bank of England. The club joined the new Eastern Counties League in 1935, the Southern League in 1936 and - at the second time of asking - was elected to the Football League in 1938.
