It is so good to see a local lad from the Bay making a big name for himself in football at the very top. At the weekend Dan Gosling made his Premiership debut on Boxing Day in Everton's 1-0 win at Middlesbrough – and was promptly named man of the match by manager David Moyes.
He then came off the bench on Mondays game against Sunderland and scored his first league goal for Everton. To think he started playing football with Brixham United before joining Plymouth Argyle as a schoolboy and then moved on to Everton earlier this year in a deal reportedly worth £1.5m.
What I find a shame is that the decent local talent ends up down the road at Plymouth. We once had John James at our club, now I do not know the views some have of him, if any, but I was his milkman for a while, when he lived on the Maldon Rd in Paignton. I always found him an OK man to talk too and I'm sure some can come up with names of players he helped to move on to greater things in football.
I know we have our links to Paignton collage, but I do feel that it is our club who should be involved with South Devon College and not Plymouth, after all they have a big area down there, to take in the young players.
We have talked about Darren Bastow on the forum before and I do wonder if he had come to his home town club, just up the road from where he lives, if things might have been different for him. He would not have had the traveling and maybe the discipline may not have been as such, that he seemed not to be able to cope with it.
Anyway good luck to young Dan, I hope he goes on to play for England, now that would sure make us Torbay people proud.
