So they should be, if they have played an unregistered player, clubs know the rules and unless it was a complete mistake, then the only reason a club would play an unregistered player, was to cheat.
playing unregistered player's and ineligible players, is something that happens all too often in football, even more so at local level.I have lost count of the number of times I have heard managers of local teams complain about being fined or having points deducted, for committing such offensives.
Only last year letters appeared in the sports press section of the Herald Express, from local managers, complaining that league officials showed no common sense. They even stated that that were not trying to cheat in any way by playing players who should not have been playing.
How does any league official know that? the rules have to be the same for all teams and decisions taken by league officials have to be seen to be fair to all clubs. Just how many players does a club have anyway? maybe 20 players and if those who run the club can't keep track, of who can play or not, then they fully deserve any fines or points deductions handed out.
Ant has over 3000 players to monitor, each game that is played is fully checked by him, each and every player is also checked to insure that not only was he permitted to play, but no team has gained any unfair advantage,by playing ineligible players.
It is hoped soon local footballers will have to have ID cards, while I feel it is sad that the league has felt that it is the way forward, it will stop so much of the cheating that is going on in football.A player will have to show his ID card before he can play in any game, no ID card and he won't get onto the pitch.
Managers will be able to view the ID cards, to satisfy themselves that the player is the same one who is on the team sheet. It will make the work load so much lighter for those who give up so much of their own free time, so that local football can even exist.

Brings to mind an incident that typifies the situation. I was helping out with an under twelve side, after an ugly match that we shaded, the opposing manager marched over the pitch and demanded to see the registration cards of our players that played that day. "Certainly" I said, knowing full well that all our players were legitimate, "as long as we can see yours." To which the said manager turned and walked away without another word. Probably forgot to bring em,, eh?
