Result: 3-2 Lawrence 3 Attendance: 2654 What a game this was. Big Les was knocked out cold by their keeper in putting us 2-1 up. Harald Schumacher eat your heart out. Les would be out for a month nowadays under head injury protocol, but in those days you threw a bucket of cold water over them and if they did not know who they were or where they were when they came round, you told them that they were Pele and to go back on and score the winner. Les duly obliged and confirmed his status as a cult hero of Willie Brownesque proportions. The great Allan "1-0" Clarke was in his first season as Barnsley player-manager. He started with a bang winning his first five league games which led Football Focus to send cameras up to Oakwell on a Tuesday night to record win no. 6, but Big Les and Peter Coffill pooped the party to pull off a 2-1 win. If you know any TUFC fans who has a video recorder back in 1978, let me know!

Strange to see a pic of Terry Lee playing against Torquay. Taking over from Mike Mahoney, his three seasons at Planmoor mixed brilliance with periodic losses of confidence. I was sad to see him released in 78, but Mike Green bought in John Turner to replace him so Terry was sandwiched between the two greatest keepers I have seen play for Torquay. After leaving Plainmoor, he had a short-term contract at Newport that yielded just one first team appearance - which just happened to be against his old club.

I was still at school in 1978 and can remember staying awake listening to the five to ten sports desk on radio two that evening to hear the result. Thats all we had back then and you had to wait until the following afternoon until the Herald Express appeared and could read all about it !

listening to the five to ten sports desk on radio two that evening to hear the result Ha ha. Yes - you had to catch the Radio 2 sports news. But turn on a minute or two too early and you'd catch the end of some absolute dross from the dark ages.
