Sad to read today that Alan Welsh has passed away aged 73. Great player for us in the late 60s and early 70s. Thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Another of the heroes of my youth gone - very sad. A great and skillful player signed near the end of the wonderful O'Farrell era, one who could go past defenders with ease and score a few important goals. RIP AW.

Lovely man. Extremely talented too. Another gone far too young.

Sad news, a great player - will never forget the Cave long throw-in, the Dunne back header and the rasping drive and goal from A Welsh!

One of the best players to wear a Torquay shirt. What a pleasure to have seen him play.
Very sad news.

I remember that Cave-Dunne-Welsh set piece like it was yesterday. We took for granted the quality of the players we had in those days.
Oh to have even one of them in today’s team.

A personal memory for me of the great man was standing on the terraces at Home Park on Saturday 5 October 1968 seeing him put through towards the end to slide in the winning goal in a 2-1 win against Argyle, then almost exactly a year later Saturday 11 October 1969 playing my first Western League game and Alan being in the team. He also had the good grace to get on the end of a crap cross from me to head home our second in a 2-0 win against the eventual champions Glastonbury. A couple of months before that in August I had been called up to be substitute away to Bridport. As a teenage fan I stood nervously outside of Freddie Hawkings Garage at the end of The Avenue in Newton Abbot waiting for the coach. As I nervously climbed the steps of the coach I glanced to my right and my legs nearly gave way as sitting together in the front seat were two of my absolute heroes Alan Welsh and Tony Scott. Alan was a very nice man and like Allan Young who also strangely often found himself in the reserves, was very considerate and helpful to younger players. About 3 years later it was nice to meet up with Alan again when I was playing for Centrax in the South Devon League Premier and he came along and took the training sessions.
Some lovely memories of an extremely talented footballer who stood out in the days when we had many exceptional players at the club, and it was very saddening to hear of his premature death.
