Result: 1-0 Livermore(OG) Attendance: 3925 Cardiff Squad includes 4 future TUFC players: Albert Larmour Ray Bishop Freddie Pethard And Steve Grapes Four and very nearly seven. In the run up to this game Dave Thomas had been very heavily speculating that Doug Livermore was about to sign for us. Well he scored for us but never played for us, signing for Chester instead. Later that season, the Herald carried a photo of Clive Charles with Mike Green signing a contract for us. Problems with the medical meant the contract was never lodged. One player who did get as far as pulling on a Torquay shirt was Phil Dwyer. By 1982, Dwyer had racked up 440 first team games for Cardiff over ten seasons and was a full Wales international, but when he injured his knee Cardiff threw him on the scrapheap. He had played under Frank O'Farrell at Cardiff so Frank got him down for pre-season to check his fitness. News that he had turned out for us at Bideford filtered back to Cardiff and they sent a scout to Barnstaple the following Monday. After two full ninety minutes in three days with no adverse reaction, Rioch had seen enough to offer a contract but Cardiff nipped in and took him back. He stayed another three years and clocked up another 135 first team games for City.
