Thank you all for your very warm welcome.
I will only post when I have something I feel is of reasonable interest and not bore you to death with too many stats.
Happy New Year to all Gulls followers and let's hope we achieve what we are hoping for in May.

Good to see John's finally made it on to here!
The good thing about Christmas is that the kids come home to see Mum and Dad - and the kids know how to fix the computer, don't they John!
John has a lot to answer for in that he sparked my interest in TUFC's history. John wrote a brilliant series of articles "Fifty years of League Football" which were serialised in the programmes throughout the 1977/78 and 1978/79 seasons.
I don't usually bother with programmes, but I bought every one in those two seasons (which meant my pocket money wouldn't stretch as far as a pasty) to read John's history. It made me wonder about the years before we got into the League. A few years later, I set aside some library time for my degree dissertation, but discovered the local history section instead. Maybe if Jean-Paul Sartre had wriiten about Percy Mackrill, I might have got a first instead of a 2.1.
Anyone who has read the "Official Centenary History" will notice changes of style in the narrative. The years 1927 to 1977 are superbly written, because they were nicked word for word from John's programme pieces. From 1977 on, it is a bit of a botch job - hopefully the worst howlers were screened out, but .....
Welcome aboard John. You won't have time to go through all the old posts - but if you get some spare time, take a look at any thread started by Barton Downs - you'll find some good stuff there!

Thanks for the introduction, Jon. I've just dived into the programme box to look at some of John's articles from thirty years ago. They're as good on a second reading as they were the first time around.
I think it's a wise policy to post only when you've something interesting and relevant to say. That was my intention too when I first posted on this site and I've now slipped from that standard. I think it's time for some New Year resolutions.
And, John, I'm sure somebody called Keith might be able to make an "educated guess" to my identity.
Jon: local library, university dissertation? Mine was The Growth and Development of Torquay 1848-1892.

Jon: local library, university dissertation? It was just to get some peace and quiet. I was too easily distracted if I stayed at home, but found myself too easily distracted at the library too.

The good thing about Christmas is that the kids come home to see Mum and Dad - and the kids know how to fix the computer, don't they John! I'm glad to be of service! Long gone are the days of dad rummaging around with a million-and-one old newspaper articles getting together his latest scribings for the Plainmoor faithful to pore over whilst dribbling crumbs of their matchday pasty. Seems like yesterday. He's still a walking almanac (/anorak) though. Hi dad!

Well another mystery solved, Barton only posted tonight about who could be related. When this tread started, I knew we had a member with the same surname and I did wonder, but know I know ;D
