5ft 7, 5ft 8” what a team of shortarses the Workington squad was made up of at the time. They went home pointless thanks to a hat-trick from famous footballing Cornish blackman, Mike Trebilcock. The first name on kids lips today might well be Psycho Janner, but will he ever go on to emulate Trebilcock who besides earning himself an F.A Cup winners medal, also counts among his notable achievements, that of being the first blackman to play for Everton, despite the impostor Cliff Marshall trying to claim the title for himself. link - Mike TrebilcockBefore Stewart pops in to ask us what’s the record shortest time between scoring a couple of goals in an F.A Cup winning performance at Wembley, and then dropping to the level of playing league football at Plainmoor, I’m sure a few others besides me will recall they were tougher times back in 1972, and you certainly had to put in a full weeks graft for your wages. Now with a 7.30pm Wednesday night kick off at Plainmoor, which side of midnight is Bricklayer Ref, Malcolm Sinclair going to get to bed at home in Guildford ? And was he expected to be on site bright and early, trowel in hand, on Thursday morning ? Now don’t be shy about sharing your scores for the European Soccer Quiz. I reckon my 5 out of 10 is more than respectable and will take some beating. I got the first 3 right, the next 5 wrong, and the final 2 correct

Now don’t be shy about sharing your scores for the European Soccer Quiz. I reckon my 5 out of 10 is more than respectable and will take some beating. I got the first 3 right, the next 5 wrong, and the final 2 correct One doesn't like boast but seeing you invited comparison I scored 9, failing on question eight. However since it now appears I am not the only person to try the quiz I must take issue with the FA Cup quiz that appears in the Bolton Wanderers programme of 05/05/1972. I officially scored 6 out of 10, but feel aggrieved at question 7 which asks "Two well known first division managers have both played in and managed cup winning sides. Who are they?" . The answer is given as Joe Mercer and Bill Shankley, and of course both these stalwarts of the game did indeed achieve that. But my answer was Bill Shankley and Matt Busby and Busby did indeed achieve the particular double in 1934 and 1963, so therefore I awarded myself an extra point to bring it up to 7. Did Torquay's impending relegation to the bottom division unleash a flurry of cost cutting measures at Plainmoor which included the dispensing of a proof reader for the programme?

plainmoorpete Blimey ! I reckon a score of 9 out of 10 gives you every entitlement to boast. What scant memories I have of the Anglo-Italian tournament as a kid, stretch no wider than thinking Blackpool were always involved. Knowing the answer to Q8 isn't Blackpool shouldn't provide much of an advantage to late entrants, and almost certainly not enough to better Pete's very impressive score of 9. Had you taken it to arbitration I'm sure you would have been awarded an additional FA Cup quiz point as well. You've every justification in awarding yourself 7 points

Sorry Pete, but I am going to have to take that point off you. Matt Busby was NOT a first division manager in 1972. He was making life virtually impossible for one particular first division manager - our very own Frank O'Farrell.

He was making life virtually impossible for one particular first division manager - our very own Frank O'Farrell. I wish to appeal your decision. The given answer in the programme gives Joe Mercer as one of the managers. Mercer left Man City in 1971 and was not appointed Coventry City manager until June 1972, one month after the programme was published. If you are disallowing my answer on the grounds that Busby was not a current manager, then neither was Mercer. My lawyers await your decision.
