I was at the Bridgwater v Truro game this afternoon and it wasn't the happiest of afternoons for Martin Rice. In the opening minutes he conceded a goal direct from a free-kick near the touchline and then, in the second half, went off with an injury. Rather surprisingly Matt Hockley was only on the bench - and didn't come on - leaving Joe Broad as the only outfield player with Torquay United connections.
Yetton equalised for Truro and that's the way it finished. But that's not the end of the story. The referee had already indicated that a foul could easily lead to a booking and, as the cautions mounted and the players didn't/couldn't change their approach, two Truro defenders were sent off for second bookings. Bridgwater didn't have the edge to take advantage and, towards the end, managed to lose both central defenders to second bookings. Cue a fair amount of moaning about the competence of the referee.
A prolonged sideshow was the embarrassing behaviour of Truro manager Sean McCarthy who was obsessed with the referee from the start. Eventually he was sent from the dug out (I've a sneaky feeling this was before any of his players saw red). I'm not sure if I saw much today to suggest Truro are safe in McCarthy's hands. He's had the cash...he's got the players...but does he know what to do with them or who to play? Always a surprising appointment - not much coaching experience, or involvement with the local game, but he does come with an "ex-Premier League" tag (half-a-season with Oldham) which Truro are eager to quote at every opportunity.
This stormy affair, which I enjoyed tremendously, watched by 531 ended with Truro chairman Kevin Heaney standing next to the dug-out fearful that McCartney's number two Dave Newton (who I believe lives in Paignton) might follow "the gaffer" to the dressing room (the linesman giving him one "last chance" on a number of occasions).

Sounded like you have had a fun day out Barton, I know a few people in Bridgwater, so I'll get their views when I return to work(5th Jan)
The goal sounds like a Ricey type goal to let in, Ant watched him at Tiverton and felt he had not made any real progress in his game or ability. Well at least the game got finished, sounded like it could have been called off before the end, due to so many getting their marching orders.

Dave, I'd be interested to know what the Bridgy fans tell you. I suspect the referee won't come out of it too well!!
But I wonder if their feelings after 90 minutes tallied with their thoughts after 45 or 70 minutes? Fair play if it did. The ref seemed pretty "consistent" throughout the game (if you get my drift).
Had Bridgwater gone on to win against a 9-man Truro I guess the feeling would have been that Truro got what they deserved. But, of course, it didn't work out like that. A game that should have finished with a hearty round of applause for Bridgy's efforts actually ended in a chorus of boos for the ref. A shame in many ways.
As for Ricey, the poor sod even got some personalised abuse from another Popular Side refugee sat a few rows in front of me. There's no escape for the boy.
And, yes, I was "on high" and sat right beneath the staggeringly-loud tannoy. Apparently it wasn't the normal announcer today which may explain why we were treated to a maximum-volume "The boys are back in town" for the first two minutes of the game.
Turn it off....

Ricey was back for Truro this afternoon for the game against Taunton. He didn't have much to do but, what he did, he did well. Hockers started in his customary midfield position - had okay game, substituted after about 70 mins.
Comfortable 3-0 win for Truro who dominated throughout in a pretty drab encounter against extremely limited opposition. Attendance 592. Andy Watkins, ex-Bideford and Argyle youth, looked the pick of the Truro team today. Sean McCarthy very quiet.
Tristan Plummer...Dwayne Plummer (ex Bristol City and Bristol Rovers)...Twaine Plummer (Taunton, ex-Radstock and Bristol Manor Farm)....are they all related?

I only looked on the old wilki Rob, it gave me the two bothers but it never heard of Twain. Must be some footballing family as I think their dad may have played, or was that Benvons dad,I get confused ;D

I think somebody speculated whether they may be the sons of Calvin Plummer (ex Forest, Chesterfield, Derby, Barnsley, Argyle). Unlikely - Calvin is fifteen years older than Dwayne and his connections (bithplace/first club) are Nottingham rather than Bristol. Twaine isn't well known at all (one of several players with the surname " Who? currently playing for Taunton). I was speculating the link as Calvin was born in 1968 and as he was a winger in the higher leagues I thought Tristan might have be his protege. A good find pikey and it answers the question, reading the report, maybe the ref should have had a good look what was written on his shirt, before he went and booked him. I expect it would not have bothered the young lad as he got to be able to pay his respects to his dad.

Always good fun speculating who is related to whom. Taunton had a Bristolian a while back called Kevin Thaws. I often wondered if he was related to Tricky (Massive Attack) - real name Adrian Thaws.
If so, he's from Knowle West. There used to be a great bit of graffiti at Ashton Gate: Knowle West is a Gas Free Zone. Quite. Not the place to wear a Rovers shirt.

I always try to check my facts so not only do I see Greg Downs played just the one game for TUFC (when on loan from Norwich in 1977) but there was also David Downs (ex Argyle) in 1959/1960. Babbacombe, of course, is my cousin. He divorced Ida some years ago and now lives in Cornwall with his second wife Quintrell. Their son, Goonhilly, is a member of Argyle's Flambards School of Excellence. |
