08/08/83 H v Aston Villa W 2 - 1 Cooper, Barnes 3,229
Steve Cooper put us ahead on 38 minutes. Paul Rideout equalised on 47 minutes. Colin Barnes got the winner on 70 minutes.
Twitch slotted back into centre-midfield, alongside Alan Little, like he had never been away. We had released him (far too early in my opinion) two years earlier.
Keith Stevens of Millwall played at right-back for us. We had no right back and would start the league season with borrowed part-timer Jeremy Collins. At the time, I assumed that Stevens was on trial and that Millwall had released him. He had only just turned 19 but had already racked up 42 first team appearances. He did not leave Millwall but stayed for another 17 years plus as player then player-manager - ending up with an incredible 557 first team appearances. One of those very rare one club men (barring his one-night stand with us!) - fitting he played in Twitch's game!
In fact Stevens was not noted as a "trialist" but as a "guest". I wonder why. Millwall had to cancel most of their pre-season games that year due to crowd trouble from their hooligan element. Is that why he was available to turn out for us?
Villa included nine of the men who won the European Cup a year earlier plus new signing Steve McMahon.

A noticeable feature of the programmes for friendlies that have been posted recently is the calibre of the opposition line ups. The entire first team, or most of the first team is fielded. I've long given up attending friendlies since the practice of changing the entire side at half time became prevalent. It seems in the old days visiting teams respected the paying supporters who turned up to watch.
