I watched from the mini stand with Everton attacking the Ellacombe end in the first half. Bob Latchford had won the Daily Express prize for hitting 30 goals in a season and the Torquay fans were chanting 'Latchford, Latchford, give us a goal' which he obliged with by heading in a goal from the six yard box. In the second half the Mini standers wound up the Everton goalie, George Wood, by chucking mud at him. It was an extremely entertaining fixture.

In the second half the Mini standers wound up the Everton goalie, George Wood, by chucking mud at him. It was an extremely entertaining fixture. Entertaining it certainly was with all six goals coming in the first half. As Pete says, Latchford put Everton ahead and fellow England international Martin Dobson made it two on nine minutes. A brilliant save by Terry Lee stopped Andy King making it three. But Mike Green's teams knew how to attack and we blasted three goals in an incredible five minute spell - Raper 26, Coffill 27 and Cooper 31 - to take the lead before yet another England international winger Dave Thomas tied it up at 3-3 on 37 minutes. Lee (Wake) Twitchin Boulton (Payne) Green Parsons (Darke) Coffill (Vassallo) Dunne Raper Tomlin Lawrence (Matthews) Cooper Wood Darracott (Robinson) Jones Wright Pejic King Dobson Buckley Thomas McKenzie (Pearson) Latchford (Jack) Ref : Shapter Starter for ten : which of those Torquay United players would go on to play for Everton within a year of this match?

Bob Latchford had won the Daily Express prize for hitting 30 goals in a season Indeed - and this was very big news at the time. Up until Alf's wingless wonders ruined the game it was relatively common for players to bang in thirty goals plus. In the season after the World Cup, big Ron Davies banged in 37 First Division goals (plus six in cups) for Southampton. But in the following ten seasons, it only happened once in the top two flights when Franny Lee (NOT the Buckfastleigh one) managed to dive his way to thirteen penalties on top of his twenty proper goals in 1971-72. So the Daily Express - in a promotional stunt aimed at encouraging attacking football - announced that they would pay £10,000 (still a lot of money in those days) to the first player to score thirty league goals in the top two flights in 1977/78. Everton had a great team that season and went on to finish third behind Nottingham Forest and Liverpool. Big Bob formed a formidable front three with the mercurial Duncan McKenzie and the brilliant winger Dave Thomas. He had scored 28 goals with three games to go so looked like he was closing in on the big prize. But he drew a blank away to both Middlesbrough and West Brom - leaving him still needing two from the last game at home to Chelsea. After 72 minutes, Everton were 3-0 but through Dobson, Wright and Robinson - it looked like the Express's money was safe. Then Latchford scored on 73 minutes to move within one of the prize. Mick Lyons (the only first teamer to miss the Plainmoor trip) made it 5-0 on 76 minutes. On 78 minutes, the tension rose as Everton were awarded a penalty. Latchford tucked it away to make it 6-0 and bag himself ten grand.
