Yes Stefano. Of course it is - hooray for Brexit . . . Well I hope the EU will be on our side when the Ruskies with thousands of troops and tanks surrounding Ukraine kick off in the next couple of weeks. 😉

A brief but horrifying look at India's Covid crisis The UK's 'Red List' again . . . NOT on the list are USA (580K deaths), Mexico (211K deaths), India (175K deaths) and Italy (116K deaths). If I remember, Portugal is the only EU Nation to have been listed at any time - Portugal has now been reprieved. But African and SOUTH American Nations are fair game apparently. www.gov.uk/guidance/transport-measures-to-protect-the-uk-from-variant-strains-of-covid-19The weakness of UK policy continues. LHR Arrivals hTTps://www.flightstats.com/v2/flight-tracker/arrivals/LHRAt the height of the pandemic in the USA nearly 12 months ago, 30 flights a day were arriving (at least)- that's going back to the time when BJ was denying the value of masks. A criminal neglect that continues . . .

Portugal was only on the list not because of the infection rate, but because of it's close links with Brazil a former colony and the large number of daily flights from Brazil compared to other EU countries.
I have a number of Italian friends having worked there for a few years, and they are still getting about 400 deaths a day. With the UK death rate being down to only about 30 per day. Italy is rapidly closing on us again for number 1 spot in Europe.
Italy & UK have been jockeying for position and constantly overtaking then slipping back, much akin to Torquay and Sutton.
I suppose while we hold number 1 spot in Europe and have a higher per capita death rate than the USA and Brazil, we can not really be critical of other countries record without looking extremely foolish.
Mind you swatcat we have had no deaths from flu in the UK this winter!
Thanks for your update trying to decide now what is the main priority - my 2nd vaccination or my 1st hair cut! 😉

Hi Stefano, thanks for your reply but I don't follow this thinking - "we can not really be critical of other countries record without looking extremely foolish". Just can't agree with that - it's not about criticism or 'face' or blame for that matter. It's about keeping infections OUT of the UK and evenmoreso, keeping out virus mutations. For the record, a quick look at Worldometer shows that Czech, Hungary, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Belgium, Montenegro, Macedonia, Slovakia and Slovenia all top the UK's death rate. www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/IMO the borders should have been closed 12 months ago with entry through controlled quarantines only - obviously with the USA and major European partners it's a sensitive matter - so at the same time as suggesting it, we should in discussion, have asked them to do the same, putting working arrangements in place on essential interchanges. If you mean your first haircut for a year or more, the priority is, BOTH ! ATB

Well I do still think swatcat that the UK cannot be critical of other countries with us having the highest death rate in Europe and a higher per capita death rate than USA, Brazil, and India. Not sure about those dodgy figures from Eastern Europe. Just before Christmas Russia doubled their figures from 60,000 to 120,000 after saying they had been counting wrong. This put Russia well ahead of us at number 1 in Europe. Two weeks later they changed the figures back again! Trust nothing east of Paris! 😉
I do though agree with your observations on border control. Have been saying that from the start. There were still daily flights landing from Wuhan when we went into the first lockdown in March 2020.
Mind you USA banned all flights from China and some other countries in early January 2020, but although sensible action it did not stop the virus running out of control across the USA.
Haircut tomorrow 1100 after which I will look very smart. 2nd covid vaccination 11 May at Home Park. It is Astra Zeneca mind so I hope it will be worth taking the chance! 😉

IMO a good long read with a helpful conclusion in this link - for openers :- "For weeks, Americans looked on as other countries grappled with case reports of rare, sometimes fatal blood abnormalities among those who had received the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19. That vaccine has not yet been authorized by the FDA, so restrictions on its use throughout Europe did not get that much attention in the United States. But Americans experienced a rude awakening this week when public-health officials called for a pause on the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, after a few cases of the same, unusual blood-clotting syndrome turned up among the millions of people in the country who have received it. The world is now engaged in a vaccination program unlike anything we have seen in our lifetimes, and with it, unprecedented scrutiny of ultra-rare but dangerous side effects. An estimated 852 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered across 154 countries, according to data collected by Bloomberg. Last week, the European Medicines Agency, which regulates medicines in the European Union, concluded that the unusual clotting events were indeed a side effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine; by that point, more than 220 cases of dangerous blood abnormalities had been identified. Only half a dozen cases have been documented so far among Americans vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, and a causal link has not yet been established. But the latest news suggests that the scope of this problem might be changing." www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2021/04/vaccine-related-blood-clot-mystery-must-be-solved/618623/?

Interesting article there swatcat. Some points are a bit of a worry but I suppose we have got to be pragmatic about it. All medicines have side effects and if anybody actually read the information leaflet listing the side effects in a packets of paracetamol, ibuprofen, or the birth control pill, nobody would ever take anything.
I had the Astra Zeneca jab before there was any talk of blood clots, but it has not put me off going back for my 2nd jab in 3 weeks time as on balance I have a lot higher chance of dying if I picked up the covid virus than I have from developing a blood clot due to the vaccine.
All life involves risk, and I suppose we just have to assess the risk. Getting in a car as a driver or a passenger is a risk, and we do it without thought on a daily basis.

All medicines have side effects and if anybody actually read the information leaflet listing the side effects in a packets of paracetamol.... nobody would ever take anything. Funny that is what I was told by a Macmillan counsellor when I was worried (actually bricking it would be a better phrase) about the side effects of chemotherapy before I had to go into hospital. Believe me chemotherapy is far worse than taking a paracetamol and I got a blood clot into the bargain, which I'm told is very common among chemo patients. Anyone my second jab is next week and I'm still going to have it.

Variants notwithstanding . . . encouraging comments indeed :- "The weekly ONS data show that Covid is now mentioned in only around one in 90 death registrations in England and Wales – the equivalent of just 1.1 per cent of all deaths registered in the week. It is the lowest proportion since the week ending Sept 11, when the figure was 1.0 per cent. At the peak of the second wave, in the week ending Jan 29, the figure stood at 45.7 per cent. The number of Covid deaths registered in England and Wales in the most recent week, to May 21, is also the lowest since the week to Sept 11. Prof Kevin McConway, emeritus professor of applied statistics at The Open University, said: "On deaths involving Covid-19, the picture is very positive. In the most recent week, 107 deaths were registered in England and Wales that had Covid-19 on the death certificate, and 66 had Covid-19 classified as the underlying cause of death. "Earlier in the pandemic, any sustained increase in new cases or hospital admissions would lead inevitably to increases in deaths a few weeks later. "That process won't occur in the same way now, because of the effect of vaccination on reducing serious illness, though it's not yet entirely clear what the new pattern might be or how new variants might play a role." Covid deaths among people aged 70 and over have fallen by 99 per cent since the second-wave peak, PA analysis also shows. Just 51 deaths in this age group occurred in England and Wales in the week ending May 14, down from 7,426 in the week ending Jan 22. Deaths for those aged 65 to 69 fell by 97 per cent in the same period, and for those aged 60 to 64 the drop is 98 per cent. The number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending May 21 was 9,860, 304 fewer than the previous week and 3.2 per cent below the five-year average." www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/06/02/nearly-40-per-cent-recent-covid-victims-died-primarily-conditions/

link - quite an in depth and very technical article on the origins of SARS-2 exploring natural evolution v lab creation and while there is no conclusive evidence for either, the circumstantial evidence does seem to be rather compelling….,
