I have been watching this all day on TV, and I'm sure that Florida will be able to answer this question:
If the House of Representatives consists of 232 Democrats and 197 Republicans (based on numbers shown during the vote), then how is it that the Republicans, in the person of Donald Trump, won the last presidential election? I understand that this process is far from being concluded as the vote now has to be brought to the Senate, so what is the difference between the H of R and the Senate, and why is it that there are conflicting majorities in the two bodies?
As far as I am concerned, Trump seems to be as odious a person as Johnson, and it would not disappoint me to see the back of both of them.

Different system there, they directly elect their president whereas our prime minister is usually the leader of the largest party. Ironically, Hillary Clinton got more votes than Trump but they have the “college” system where Clinton stacked up votes in her safe seats but Trump won more of the marginals. The H of R and Senate are the equivalent to our houses of Commons and Lords but unlike us they are both directly elected and not all at the same time. So the Yankees get 3 elections to our one! Better democratic system imo.

Yeah...don't you just hate it when Presidents and Prime Ministers have a mind of their own, instead of just following the moronic hordes! Trump has a mind of his own, Johnson has a mind of his own...down with Trump...down with Johnson...down with Big Brother!

so what is the difference between the H of R and the Senate, and why is it that there are conflicting majorities in the two bodies? The House of Representatives (the lower chamber) is elected in proportion to the population of the USA. For example California with a population of @40 million has 53 seats in the House, whilst Wisconsin with a population of @6 million has 8 seats. In the Senate (the upper house) each state, regardless of its population, has 2 senators. So in the Senate Wisconsin has the same voting power as the much larger California. Since Wisconsin tends to lean to the Republicans in contrast to California's Democrat leanings, this is why Congress is split between the two parties.

Senate obviously unlikely to find him guilty in their ‘trial’. His protestation of innocence on the basis ‘look at the script’ is bizarre (as script really doesn’t help him at all) but calculated on the basis they will acquit. Will await Flo’s US resident thoughts on the matter. Although he’s probably as sick of all the coverage on that as we had become on Brexit.

I don't honestly understand why the Democrats bothered with this. Ahead of next year's election it seems like a desperate attempt to fix the outcome and as Flo mentions there is not a cat in hells chance of impeachment coming about. I think the actual result will be a shot in the arm for Trump and will work against who ever is the Democrats candidate.
