I think the hardest defeats are those when you’re clearly the better side, play better on the day but come up against some dogged defending with the occasional counter attack which was a strategy that came up trumps for Maidenhead this evening to give them a very, very, very flattering 0-2 win.
For the first half hour we were building up a good head of steam as we looked for an opening and around the 18 minute mark in particular it looked like we must score with Reid getting through and seeing his shot just tipped wide and from the resulting corner Cameron seeing his header crash into the underside of the bar and then somehow staying out.
MacDonald had to get down quick to smother the ball when their forward got through on goal but otherwise had nothing to do in this opening period. Then a long ball saw Cameron tussle with their forward but with Vincent drawn into the fray, the ball came nicely out for their follow up attacker with space now to shoot just outside the area which MacDonald saved but the ball fell nicely for their forward to slot home. The half then drew to a subdued conclusion where the side needed to regroup.
We came out firing in the second half with some nice passing directly from kick off with Reid put through but he saw his shot blocked. We tried to continue to build up pressure with various scrambles in the box, Connor having a penalty shout and Kalala showing some fancy footwork at times but we were unable to carve out clear chances and those half chances were poorly taken at times. Niate seemed to pick up an ankle injury which meant Lewis coming on probably at the expense of Edwards.
Then in injury time as the side got forward a long ball over the top saw their striker get free of the covering defender and after cutting back inside was able to slot the ball home.
So not a good day at the races and that is just football. I thought it was a battling performance and at times we played very well and were able to get our passing game working but the ball just did not fall for us in the penalty area. Onwards and upwards, I understand that Leyton had 4 points from 4 games this time last year as well....

Disappointing result against another physical and street wise set of players who looked decidedly ragged early on.
The game was lost in the first half hour simply because we failed to convert a host of chances when we were well on top and were then hit by the inevitable sucker punch.
You could see it coming.
With youth you get a bit of naivety I guess, we just switched off for a few seconds and it costs us the game.
Once ahead Maidenhead dug in and just concentrated on defending which improved vastly as the game wore as we continued to play our passing game but simply couldn't get past their back line.
Personally I thought all of the players put in a great shift and played some decent football and If Reid had taken one of those early chances I'm certain it would have been a totally different outcome.
In terms of possession we must have had 70% of the ball but that counts for nowt if you don't hit the onion bag.
Older wiser players won this game for Maidenhead for sure. The second goal was purely a result of our pushing everyone forward in the dying minutes.
Was a little surprised when Asa Hall came off he was having a good game but my guess is GJ wanted to try something different and it was purely a tactical move that didn't really work or benefit, Duku being largely ineffective.
Also thought Opi Edwards would have got some pitch time - Ruari does his best but sometimes lacks that "special" factor which I do see in Edwards.
Booing at the end not on but we with our success of last season we have acquired a few Kevin and Perry's, the comments on social media are pathetic.

Not a happy Gary Johnson. He’s going to be ringing the changes for Saturday. Davis can’t come back soon enough at left back. And the ‘keeper sounding a bit suspect again for the first goal. Was it the case - as I have read elsewhere - that Vincent was caught out of position before MacDonald spilled their shot and pushed it back into the danger area for the first? If so, there’s two personnel changes right there if Davis is fit for Saturday. Duku likely to make way for the Newport lad on the bench at Dover? He didn’t sound pleased with the subs that came on and I haven’t read or heard anything positive regarding Duku’s spell on the pitch. Johnson also seemed fairly unimpressed with the boo boys tonight. It’s frustrating, but we shouldn’t be booing our young players after a loss early into the season in a higher League. It’s so counter-productive and really doesn’t reflect well. If any of them think we have a divine right to blow all away as we did last season they need their bloody heads read. |

Didn’t clock the booing, still a lot of clapping in BB as our players exited but that was definitely not a booing performance and probably from those who did not see the Owers year! |

Not really close enough to comment on MacDonald’s save but I thought pre match he is under pressure. Having said that I really like Vincent as a player but it is not his position and Davis will strengthen the side with his imminent return. Duku is not a targetman but the ball was lumped high to him in the area several times with zero return so may be the decision making from his team mates was to blame as well? |

Plenty of positives despite the defeat. Forget the odd errors the problem was simple. We didn't score when on top and their keeper played a blinder.
GJ obviously and quite rightly upset by the few fair weather morons who claim to be supporters and have hopped on the bandwagon.
Sometimes it just doesn't happen and tonight was one of those nights.
Ringing the changes? he doesn't have that many options its up to us to continue to support him and the players we were quiet tonight I thought.
There are good times ahead but we have to be patient and not expect to win every bloody game.
Vincent was excellent tonight and did little wrong but we do need another old head in their and Mr consistency Liam Davis is due to return soon.
Duku hasn't really showed us anything YET! There's still time for him to shine....

Quite an impressive crowd considering our ropey start. If we don't start knocking in a few though, you can wipe 500 off next home game!
Still a few morons about it sounds like. Of course this will happen whilst they continue to practice incest in Hele Village!
I remember my last six months at school, when I was kicked out of B stream and cast down amongst the Sodomites...or C stream, where the Hele Village and Watcombe kids roamed!
To be honest, they were quite open about their sexual preferences, and proud to follow in their parents footsteps...after all, their parents did have a lot of feet!! 😁

I think Garry should not be not so generous with his press interviews.
He looked and sounded frustrated as we all were but its important to keep the players on your side.
Not sure who he was suggesting may not be up to it but the club is not made of money. Some of these player are on long contracts.
He must also be questioning his own judgement to some degree Duku doesn't look a threat to me and doesn't play to Reids strengths. Missing Janneh who probed, teased and ran at defenders that created space for Reid. Ill be surprised if he scores a dozen goals this term. Scored one screamer but has been snatching at chances of late.
We needed some muscle and physicality up front last night to ruffle defenders in and around the box.
Niate was obviously told to get in the box at every opportunity but was then withdrawn.
Didn't think Asa Hall looked overjoyed at coming off.
He was having a good game..and the changes achieved nothing.

If you're going to slate Hele Village try to a bit more accurate with your observations. It was much worse than the way you describe it. Passing through there with my parents on the way to MFI, used to make me realise how lucky I was to live in Foxhole. Yes, Hele Village, what a lovely place, I would give it a wide berth as a kid! Already told the story of a distant relative being chased from the standard by a guy with a knife...blew his leg off with a shotgun! Went in the standard once, very strange place! It must of been talent night or something, because they were all sat there with Banjos trying to out play each other! |

Yep, tiny deflection off Vincent but should have held on to that as quite a weak shot in the end. Massive moment in the match but still cannot believe that we contrived not to score with all those chances! |

Thought we were excellent for the first 30 minutes or so and could have easily been 3 nil up by 8.15pm. However, these chances couldn't be converted and after a soft goal to concede found ourselves 1 nil down.
Not sure If we should be playing 1 up front, unless that's so we can squeeze in CLE. Not sure why Andrew's takes first place on the wing in front of Keating and certainly Edward's.
Thought that GJ should sign up the Maidenhead CB pair, big and strong, won everything in the air and had the experience for this strong and physical league.
Cracking second goal with the CB striking the ball with the outside of his boot, straight to Shakatak who had two defenders and a keeper to beat to score and he DID!
