In 1976 I went on the Torquay United Supporters Club trip to see two away matches over the Easter period, at Watford and Bournemouth respectively.
Easter was late that year and after the holiday period, Torquay had only one fixture remaining. At the end of the season Bournemouth finished 6th, Watford 8th and Torquay 9th. What a contrast to the current season in which both Bournemouth and Watford are firmly established in the Premiership!
Both matches ended as goalless draws; Watford on Good Friday (Apr 16) and Bournemouth the following day. Each game was a tepid affair and highlighted the importance of the playoff system.
At least Torquay were consistent over the Easter period as they drew 0-0 at home to Cambridge United on Easter Monday morning!

A lot of traveling and some expense too, but not witnessing a single goal. Though I expect teignmouth54 has mostly fond memories of that Easter triple header. Yet perhaps it sheds a little light on why it would only be another 5 years before the British football authorities made the change to 3 points for a win.
Given that at the time of teignmouth54's goalless Easter, the offside rule was still weighted much more in favour of the defending team, and the easy safe option of knocking the ball back to your goalkeeper for him to pick up was very much allowed, it does emphasise goalscoring feats such as those achieved roundabout that era and before, by the likes of Robin Stubbs, were quite remarkable.
And 'long' corners in those days, with the ball placed and kicked from a position well within the quadrant....as Stewart will testify.
This Easter by contrast, even with just the 2 fixtures, we almost feel entitled to enjoy some more goals, so well has our team been playing. Yes, it's at a lower standard than the mid 70's of course, but the exciting, flowing, attacking football so often served up, can still be thoroughly enjoyed nonetheless. A different football world from 1976.

I was only thirteen at the time and i really fancied this trip but unfortunately my mum was having none of it !...
