Our first goal on Saturday was our 100th goal in competitive football this season. We are now up to 102 (86 league, 14 FA Cup, 2 FA trophy).
Contrary to what you might read elsewhere, this is the fourth time this feat has been achieved - with one other occasion being not as far in the past as you might think.
We need another two goals to go past the totals posted by Paul Buckle's team in 2007/08 (83 league + 3 play-offs + 6 FA Cup + 11 FA trophy = 103) and Percy Mackrill's boys in 1925/26 (59 Southern League + 27 Western League + 17 FA Cup = 103).
We need another ten to beat the record set in 1926/27 (63 Southern League + 47 Western League + 1 FA Cup = 111).
Don't swallow the nonsense about senior full-time football starting in 1927!
There is also a bit of a silly story going around that our league title win in 1927 does not count because we "lost the play-off". As I have documented on here before, the 1927 match with Brighton was not a high-stakes end-of-season winner-takes-all decider. It was a low key glorified friendly played in midweek well into the following season. Torquay did not even bother to field our first team and included a couple of trialists. It certainly did not decide anything.
If you argue that Torquay did not win the entire Southern League in 1927, then you would have to say that we certainly will not win the entire National League in 2019 - that will probably fall to Leyton Orient or Salford. We do hope to emulate the boys of 1927 by finishing top of the league in which we played - winning a championship by any sensible definition.
