I've just now posted the following on the Chelmsford City Fans' Forum and wondered what you guys thought about it-
There have been some postings on the Torquay Fans' Forum about the state of their pitch. Because of the groundshare with Truro, the pitch has already hosted well over a normal season's number of games. It seems the pitch is clay-based, which inhibits proper drainage, and their groundsman has been ill. And although the club possesses covers these are for frost and not suitable for protecting the pitch from heavy rain. And, of course, we have already seen our first attempt to play our game, which was scheduled for February 09, thwarted by the postponement on February 08 due to a waterlogged pitch - because we are travelling a great distance, the postponement was made the day before the match was due to be played....
Torquay are due to play WSM at home this afternoon and that game will go ahead, although the forecast wind strength could render the game somewhat of a lottery - 24mph gusting to 37. However, rain, a lot of it heavy, is due to commence in the Torquay area at around 6pm today and it is forecast to continue until after midnight on Monday morning! Here are the details of the rain forecast-
Today 6pm to 7pm, 60% chance of Light Rain
Today 7pm to 11pm, 80% to 90% chance of Heavy Rain
Today 11pm to Sunday 2am, 50% chance of Light Rain
Sunday 2am to 10am, 80% to 95% chance of Heavy Rain
Sunday 10am to 11am, 50% chance of Light Rain
Sunday 11am to 12am, 80% chance of Heavy Rain
Sunday 12am to 1pm, 60% chance of Light Rain
Sunday 1pm to 4pm, 80% to 90% chance of Heavy Rain
Sunday 4pm to 5pm, 50% chance of Light Rain
Sunday 5pm to 10pm, 30% to 40% chance of Light Rain Showers
Sunday 10pm to Monday to Monday 3am, 60% chance of Light Rain
Summary of the rain forecast for the 33 hours from 6pm today to 3am Monday-
16 hours of Heavy Rain with an average chance of 86%!
12 hours of Light Rain with an average chance of 56%
5 hours of Light Rain Showers with an average chance of 35%
33 Hours in total
So, in that 33 hour period it's forecast to be raining 67% of the time, most of it heavily.
From 3am Monday to kick-off time the forecast is for little, if any, rain but on Monday morning the pitch will in all probability be in a waterlogged state given the 33 hours of continuous rain forecast.
In my view, the game should be considered "doubtful," then. And even if the game does go ahead, the condition of the pitch, allied with the forecast wind levels for the game of 21mph gusting to 35mph, will in all probability render the game a lottery.... Oh. And I almost forgot. The Met Office is also currently forecasting a 90% risk of Heavy Rain for the second half of Tuesday's game!
