Gordon appeared twice at Plainmoor. This friendly against Stoke in 1969 had an England goalie at both ends with England Amateur keeper John Shippey (of Oxford City) in goal for Torquay. Banks was clearly England's number 1, but a much tougher choice for George Eastham at Hellenic as to who to leave out. Banks broke his right hand in his second match in June 1971, leaving the way clear for Kenny Allen. Gordon battled on after his accident in October 1972, returning to play Central League and friendly games for Stoke towards the end of the 1972/73 season - and a final "England" appearance as he captained Alf Ramsey's FA XI in a 9-0 victory over Gibraltar. Eight of the goals came from full internationals or full internationals to be : Terry Paine 3, Frank Worthington 3 and Trevor Francis 2. The ninth came from someone called David Sunley. Who the hell is he? www.rsssf.com/tablesb/britishfatours.html#1973ENGBanks finally decided to retire just before the start of the 1973/74 season, coaching at Stoke and only playing in various friendlies and testimonials including this one for Jimmy Hill's team against Saudi Arbia: He then made a comeback playing two seasons (1977 and 1978) with Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the NASL.

David Sunley was a centre forward who played for Sheffield Wednesday in the early 1970s.
Peter Dobing was, in my opinion, the best player never to be selected for England. Strange that Tony Allen played at centre back after playing at left back for England, also Harry Burrows, who was predominantly left footed, appearing to start on the right if this programme is accurate. David Herd's name is also wrongly spelled.
Perhaps this match occurred around the time when numbers started to mean less, as (7) Cave, (8) Rudge and (9) Stubbs would have made more sense.

He was a good player in those days, alongside Brian Joicey and Roger Wylde, but perhaps you had better let me know what his username is so that I can read his reminiscences from the past and know who he is. I am sure that he would agree with me that Sheffield Wednesday's greatest ever player was John Fantham, who shamefully was selected for England only once.

Thanks for starting this thread Jon. Total legend from a different era and a real gentleman. RIP Gordon Banks. So many fond memories.

There had been a suggestion that all PL keepers wear the Banks blue number 1 jersey for a weekend of matches as a tribute. Would like to see this happen. The jerseys could then be raffled off for charity.
