I have just watched Question Time on BBC1, and was appalled to learn that teenagers and other young people are being damaged by reading or seeing detrimental images or messages on facebook, twitter or instagram. At the age of 72, I have never found any need or desire to become involved in any of these vehicles of gossip. On the other hand, I do understand that younger people may find it useful to exchange sensible information in this way.
However, young people are reported to be taking their own lives or sustaining mental health problems. It is no longer valid to say that parents should be intervening and switching off their TV sets, as there now exist tablets, iphones and all of the other devices which seem to be appearing on a daily basis, which can be used outside of the family home. And I don't want to hear arguments about increasing funding for mental health care which, in genuine cases, is all too welcome, but in this scenario is totally irrelevant.
If these "platforms" are causing such distress to our young people, causing them to kill themselves or become mentally damaged, then surely the time has come to have them banned altogether.

For anyone advocating big Government involvement as regards intervention with youngsters and their use of computers and the internet, there's some good news. It's been decided to leave the social media networks as they are, and confiscate the kids instead .

Dear Register Nice quote above by Albert Einstein. Only problem is he never said it. There is no published instance of it prior to 2012, 57 years after Einstein passed away. It is simply an internet based fabrication, although that didn't the Daily Mail running a feature on it in 2015.

I just couldn't see Einstein using the word 'idiot!'...he was far too clever for that! We all try and be someone we're not! When a pretty woman asks me my name, I always say Brad Pitt! For some unknown reason though, they never believe me! Whoever it was that made that statement (even though they were using the name of someone else)...they were absolutely correct!

An American mate of mine said several years ago that "The smarter phones get, the dumber we become", which was quite an astute observation for a nation already educationally challenged, compared to the rest of the world. Are you saying, that Americans aren't that bright? Slightly off topic...do you carry a gun?

Sorry guys, but these humorous responses are not really what I was looking for when I started this thread about a very serious matter which is detrimentally affecting the lives of many young people. In my view, it is time to call time on these "things" called facebook, twitter, instagram, etc., because they are doing so much damage to the minds of vulnerable youngsters.
Never mind if a lot of older people derive some kind of pleasure from them, although I fail to see how they can when their content is little more than gossip. We have to get our priorities right.

All I’ll say on the matter, Stewart, is that they are here to stay until or unless their popularity wanes. They are used and used by millions if not billions. They are part of modern society now, whether you or I like it or not.
