It almost felt like a FA Cup giant killing where the plucky underdogs somehow kept the ball out of the net and got the decisions to go their way and took their chance for an unlikely win. Unfortunately, it was two similar level teams with Woking somehow getting 3 crucial decisions to go their way - could have and perhaps should have been 2-0 to us.
I suppose the consolation is that Woking looked a better side than Billericay and they have now rode their luck twice at Plainmoor leaving us to concentrate on the league.
It was good to see Andrews back in the team and he mainly played on the right wing with Kalala again doing well on the opposite side. We started off better and from a freekick which was nodded back in by Cameron, the ball was slotted into the back of the net but flagged offside by the lino - I know Cameron was behind the defender to head the ball back in but was running onto a deep cross and didn’t feel like it was offside.
Woking responded to this by having a few forays into a penalty area and causing a spot of bother for five for 10 minutes but thereafter we started to dominate again and had some great chances which the keeper was up to including a cross which was hit into the ground and forced a fine reaction save. Lemonheigh-Evans came up with a fine individual effort dribbling past several players but his shot from just inside the area was not quite hard enough. He was our best player as their goalkeeper was theirs.
The second half started a bit like the Billericay game again. We had a great chance to score from an early corner which was cleared off the line by the defender and from this they went to the other end on the break and forced Niate into a last ditch tackle which looked like he got the ball first but the second big official decision went their way for a penalty which was well taken to the rapture of their fans.
This changed the complexion of the game where we now needed to break Woking down. I think we struggled in this aspect by not having Edward’s pace on the wing which has perhaps been a significant factor in the last couple of results. kalala was taken down and the referee in his haste to award a yellow in our favour did not realise the ball had gone onto the penalty area and play advantage where Janneh was clattered as the whistle was blown. Stonewall penalty and a lousy free kick was awarded.
The last good chance came at the end of the 90 with the ball pinging around the six yard box but again could not be forced home. Football hurts sometimes.....

I thought we got well and truly mugged by the referee today by awarding Woking their penalty. Sat behind the goal it was clear to us all that Niate cleanly won the ball with his sliding tackle when Woking were through on goal in the penalty area on our right. He hardly made contact with the Woking player and it was an excellent tackle. Thanks for that, it was clear he got the ball from the angle it went out but wasn’t sure about the contact on him.

There was another controversial moment later in the second half. Kalala got brought down about 30 yards out and the referee appeared to wave play on as the ball fell to Janneh in the box who was then taken out by a Woking player. The referee warded a free-kick for the original foul. The incident was down the other end from me so I will be interested to see a replay on that as well. That happened right in front of me. Referee was so intent on awarding a yellow completely took his eye off the ball and blew the whistle just as Janneh got taken out. Poor show.

Two draws and a loss when reverting to 4-4-2. Hmmmn... I suppose the question is whether 4-4-2 is the preferred model or that dictated by injury? For me, Hall, Andrews and Evans in the middle with Edwards and Davis as wingbacks has seen us at our best

link - highlights - telling that just about every attack was from Torquay apart from the goal which seemed to be very harsh

Happy with that result! The last thing we need at the moment is the distraction of a cup (that includes the awful one coming up) run! 100% focus on getting out of this league is required, 'cause if we don't get out this season, I doubt we will get out the next! How long is Johnson going to be here? What contract is he on? Yesterday...again, we needed a striker! Something we have missed since The Great Man himself left I suppose. Into this conundrum comes young Olaf though...should we play him...or should we not? If we were banging them in LR&C then no, but we're not, so I think he should start! Of course we now have the problem of the 'Snowflake' generation...what did Einstein say: Because of technology, we're going to have a generation of idiots! 104 years ago, kids as young as 14 were marching down to the recruiting office trying to join the forces (some of them managed too) go off to Europe (we thought it was a Basket Case then...look how much worse it is now) and face German machine guns! Rupert Brooke wrote: If I should die, think only this of me that there's some corner of a foreign field that is forever England.
If anybody happens to know where this corner of a foreign field is, please let me know, because I'm moving there! The England of 104 years ago seems far more preferable than the England of today!
I live in a tiny community, and today, most of us will stand by the memorial at the top of the hill. Even in such a remote farming area (imagine what it was like all those years ago) four members of the local farmers lost their lives. Poignantly, one of them died on the last day of the war...so 100 years ago today.

Two draws and a loss when reverting to 4-4-2. Hmmmn... That is not correct Rob. We did not play 4-4-2 yesterday. When I heard the lineup, my guess was that Andrews would replace Keating wide left but that is not what happened. Janneh played wide right not up front. Kalala played on the left not the right. Reid played up front on his own. Dickson was very much a holding midfielder, with Andrews and Lemonheigh-Evans ahead of him. In the first half, they played "the wrong way round", presumably so both could make diagonal runs and be on their better foot for a shooting chance. It could be best described as a 4-1-4-1 - or a 4-3-3 at a push. The formation played to the strengths of Andrews and Lemonheigh-Evans, but Reid is not suited to playing as a lone striker. You need someone who can hold the ball up and lay off to the onrushing four. Rene Howe in his prime would have been ideal. Janneh is not suited to a wide role and does not give the cover to the right back that Edwards does. What joy Woking did have was in getting behind Wynter and to the side of Niate. Not sure if that would have happened with Edwards in front of Wynter. We went to 4-4-2 when Keating replaced the tiring Andrews. Keating went wide left, Kalala went right and Janneh through the centre - so back to the formation we had used in the previous four games. By the end, we were playing a good old-fashioned 2-3-5 with Wynter and Dickson as wing halves, Lemonheigh- Evans an attacking centre-half and five up front including Liam Davis! We definitely played 4-4-2 in the comfortable wins over Winchester and Wealdstone. So recent record is: 4-4-2: played four won two drawn two, 4-3-3: played one lost one.

The England of 104 years ago seems far more preferable than the England of today! Really? My ancestors lived in abject poverty, as did the vast majority of the population!

I will observe the 2 minutes when it's 11am here. Like I did here, wearing my poppy.
