This is our only previous meeting with Saturdays opponents over 42 years ago during that summer of 1976. It was played at their old Lower Mead Stadium they vacated in 1991 and Torquay lost 1 3... our only defeat of that pre season. Jon may be along later with the scrorers and attendance if we are lucky ! God knows how warm it was in London that afternoon and Elton John and Kiki Dee were in the middle of a mind numbing six week stretch at number one...

We lost 3-1. Steve Morrall scored our goal. We had played a match against Brighton at Plainmoor the previous evening. Five first-teamers - Lee, Stocks, Rudge, Hickman and Brown - were rested. Six of the Western League squad - Robbins, Sanderson, McGiven, Bolt, Goode and Paul Edwards were in the sixteen-man squad that traveled. If anyone knows our actual lineup, please let me know! Alan Merson explained the reason for the match on this old thread: torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/1388/lost-grounds-north-west-london?page=1

We had played a match against Brighton at Plainmoor the previous evening. Yes the match was definitely played on Friday 6th August 1976 despite the date on the programme cover ! Half way through the school holidays i can remember sitting on the open terracing to the left of the pop side on another lovely summer evening. Happy days !

Fantastic summer that.
Did you go to the Rec that day to watch the Windies?
Funny date on the prog. We were at Home Park clinching the prestigious South West Holidays Cup on August 11.
By the time we had beaten Huddersfield and Doncaster in our first two league games and turfed Bournemouth and Burnley out of the League Cup I was convinced that the Gulls were going up.
The joys of innocent youth.
