Another great signing as the marvellously talented young goalkeeper Alex Bass joins us for the whole season from Portsmouth. Gary Owers rightly declaring '“I feel rather fortunate to get him, to be honest. I think it could be a massive, massive signing for us”Whether Gary was right to be patient and wait until he could get the quality he needed, rather than offer terms to anyone who was willing to sign in early June, we'll have to see. If Wor Gazza's 'Less haste more speed' approach pays dividends, then we'll surely see a number of his constant critics over the Summer keeping noticeably quieter. link- Wor Gazza Hooks Big Bass For Net Duty

Bass for the whole season is good news. Paper talk Pompey way had been of a 6 month deal, but very pleased we have got him in for the season.

chelstongull Given that we've not got the easiest set of opening fixtures, it would be perverse of me to be the very person incentivising Chelston with a prize of free champagne, to step up his campaign to get Gary Owers sacked (which is scheduled to kick off before August is out) when I need Owers to survive ' in situ' for the whole of the season, and to claim one of the two out of twenty two possible finishing positions (i.e top of the table or play off winners) to get that pie and pint. I shall therefore put the best interests of team over self, and take no part in motivating another's obsessive wish to see Mr.Owers join the dole queue. However, in reality both myself and Chelston will be singing from the same hymn sheet. We've both stumped up our money up front for a season ticket, and it's in both our interests to see good, entertaining, and winning football. Win promotion and neither of us might be too bothered who's buying the celebratory pints.....(although thinking back to a few of the things I've read about Chelston, I could be very wrong on that last point ). I'm quietly confident that by the end of the season I could well be in possession of a 'Local Board Member Expenses Debit Card' entitling me to treat a loyal season ticket holder such as Chelston to one or more pints in order to toast something as important as promotion. chelstongull What's there not to like about having a damn fine squad put together in ultra quick time? And in that respect Chelston and his loyal band of 'concurrers' surely speak for all of us. However in these days when success is required to be sustainable, then you need to enable the necessary conditions. If we haven't the means to generate the revenue to justify splashing the cash during the close season, then that lack of sustainability will hold us back. We're all conscious of the wonderful weather this Summer; a couple of sell out concerts at the Osborne Arena and income would have allowed for that promotion squad to have been bought and paid for when you wanted it....weeks or even months ago. To get what we want we need to do our part in helping to create the conditions. Petition your councillor to get a move on allocating the land so that CO and the board can move forward with the designs. Tell your Moderate TUST leaders to put aside further political games, and to instead concentrate on helping get the move we need in order to generate the income which would allow us to better compete with clubs higher up the ladder. The wish list on it's own was OK, but so much better if we also take some steps towards helping turn it into reality.

He had a good deal of time to improve results during 17/18 but failed. I don't think he got us out of the bottom 4 during last season. As the previous manager was given the Spanish Archer after 4 games, to give Owers 2 or 3 games more I think is more than fair. Lets see where we are at the end of August. Looking forward to that beer though

I would certainly advocate more literary minimalism!

He had a good deal of time to improve results during 17/18 but failed. I don't think he got us out of the bottom 4 during last season Not wishing to split hairs but as the season finished, I did a quick rough calculation breaking the season into thirds. First third was shocking frankly. The middle third improved on points per game but, to be honest, couldn't really get much worse, and the final third improved again (to the extent that had that points return been present all season, we may have been thinking of just sneaking into the playoffs). Personally speaking, I'm going to keep an open mind for the first third of the season to see how we look.

It's been embedding itself in football to an ever greater degree for decades now, Stewart. The task is to make more people aware of that, with the aim of driving it out, and hopefully return to a happier state where the two can be far more separated.
But in the past I, like too many others, were guilty of trying to ignore this growing politicisation taking place, to the extent that our club came perilously close to falling into the hands of Left wing activists; before the alarm bells were sounded, and fans attention was drawn to that impending danger. Sadly it's too early for complacency, and I fear vigilance will be required for some time yet. But I do still optimistically hope that the time will come when those hoping to use football for their own political ends will move away from the game for good, thereby leaving me and others to go back to enjoying the football without the need to keep one eye on their political manoeuverings.
A successful season on the pitch would be a big help, making fans far more interested and content and less willing to take notice of Militant attempts at agitation. Plenty of good signings, you might concur, so let's see us putting in a decent challenge at the right end of the table once this new squad gells.

I myself do not feel confident that Owers can deliver promotion, but in all fairness to the man it has to be realised he was seriously hampered by what happened in the first ten games of last season. He didn't have "nearly the whole season" to put things right as nearly a quarter of it had been wasted before he got here.

Can anyone confirm how many games that was?

75% or three quarters of the season. Can anyone confirm how many games that was? 36 / 46 = 78.26% Two more than Nicholson had when he came in and a lot more than Hargreaves had when he came in.
