What a ridiculous game. You have one player standing at the back of the action who tries to throw the ball to one of two other players well down the field, who simply need to run with ball in hand beyond the endline without actually touching it down. In the meantime, the other eight players stand in midfield and attempt to wrestle each other to the ground. The game is supposed to last 60 minutes, and yet the TV programme goes on for over four and a half hours. The commentators talk about brilliant kicks between the posts which Owen Farrell would execute with his eyes shut.
Thank goodness we have rugby union and the Americans have their own stupid game which is nothing more than an excuse to present statistical claptrap, TV advertising and razzmatazz.

I tried it for 5 minutes just now. Hadn't got a ruddy clue what was going on and players seemed to be celebrating when there appeared nothing much to celebrate. Not for me. I tried it before, as I like to think I'm reasonably open minded. I had a similar feeling then as well. I'm prepared to accept that for some it will be a passion. When a sport takes a grip on you, it's there forever. I think I'll be resisting whatever pleasures are to be had from American Football for a while yet.

For once, we agree, Stewart. Complete and utter commercial exploitation. The last thing SB is about is the game. It's just a vehicle for ads at a colossal price per second, aimed at generating even more revenue for the companies in the ads. This is the true face of USA. The only thing that rules in this country is money. And when you are super-rich you can get anything you want, even the presidency of the US. Sometimes I wonder what keeps me here. Given your username, the weather might come into it, I reckon. You'll have a Miami MLS franchise to cheer on soon, Flo.

Just joking, I do always respect your views and I'm glad that at last we can agree about something.

Got to give the yanks this, it is only on for 4 or 5 months, they know when not to over expose it. Also their draft system and salary cap give a more level playing field than in europe. Anyway as a Pittsburgh steelers fan I am well pleased with the result.

Also their draft system and salary cap give a more level playing field than in Europe. I agree. Obviously the sums involved will vary per sport revenues, which are gigantic for American Football. Anomalies, sometimes bizarre ones, will occur as no system will be perfect. I like similar systems in T20 Cricket or with rider averages in Speedway. That general idea in sport, where it is workable, can appear more admirable. More sporting. The notion of squad building in the case of IPL and American Football, provides a fair bit of 'extra-curricular' entertainment too.

I really like NFL.
I went a few years ago to a NFL game at Wembley - Detroit v Atlanta, and it was one of the most exciting sport events I’ve been to,w especially the way it finished and I’ve been fan of Detroit ever since - not that they are very good and sadly sacked Jim Caldwell this year.
Some sports are enjoyable for some and others are not. I find cricket to be tediously dull. I cannot think of a sport that is more boring, apart from perhaps golf.
