The first time I'd been able to get along to Plainmoor since King Kev's last match in charge; the 4-2 defeat at the hands of Boreham Wood. I'm now almost quite used to a Plainmoor match delivering a hatful of goals, and will expect the same on Saturday. Whether we agree with him or not, Clarke Osborne has authorised considerable expenditure to revamp the Coaching set-up at the club and to bring in further talented loanees. Today we learn that one of the most impressive of those loan players, George Dowling, is having his stay with us extended. A further indication that the club owners are authorising the necessary steps to retain or bring in quality recruits.
Maidenhead got what the deserved for leaving us kicking our heels for an extra 30 minutes on Tuesday. They've got a good team, but maybe they were caught a little by surprise by the determination with which we went about our task straight from the kick off. Adrift at the bottom of the league and without a win, then a tentative, low on confidence opposition could have been what they were expecting. What they actually faced from the very first minute was a Gulls side firing on all cylinders.
Luke Young had a fantastic game, Liam Davis brings exceptional quality to the left back position, and Jamie Reid can bring the endeavour, though not always the finesse, that makes him a real handful for opponents.
The first half was almost too good to be true, but even the second period in which Maidenhead pressed us hard in their quest to pull a goal or two back, was satisfying in it's way as we defended resolutely.
We're bottom of the league. Dover are as good as top. It's a very tough follow up fixture, but confidence will have been boosted by the win and the scoreline from Tuesday. Let's hope that many of the positives are still apparent on Saturday, whatever the result.
