I wonder if Barton, Jon or any of the others know any other answers to this question...Has the FA Cup ever been won by a team on an island OFF the British Isles? Portsmouth and Fratton park is based on an island off the B.Isles!!!... Portsea Island is a small, flat and low lying island just off the south coast of England. The island is totally within, and contains a large proportion of the city of Portsmouth. It has the largest population of any island in the British Isles, after the mainlands of Great Britain and Ireland. To the east lies Langstone Harbour, and to the west is Portsmouth Harbour. To the south it faces into the Solent. A small channel, known as Ports Creek, separates the island from the mainland, Great Britain. Three road bridges, a pedestrian and cyclist bridge and a rail bridge connect the island to the mainland. In addition there are ferry services to Gosport (on the mainland), Hayling Island and the Isle of Wight. There are seven bridges. A small bridge also joins it to Whale Island. The name of Portsea is also used for the administrative district of Portsmouth, located in the south-west corner of the island. I didn't know this, until i moved here!

Brett, I despair of you. You are such a tit! Portsea is NOT an island off the British Isles, it is one of the thousands (over 6,000!) of "British Islands". Even Ireland is one of the British Isles although only a small part of it (Northern Ireland) is part of The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland - to give this country it's full name. Heaven help you on the Isle of Dogs if with it's BNP support if you spouted such nonsense there! You would need to go as far North as Iceland to find an island off the British Isles - and knowing you, you'd be faffing about looking for a supermarket trolley on arrival............ think about it!

Although Merse is technically correct, I think we all knew what you meant Brett. Good stat! Quiz question in years to come? Obviously we'd have to re-word it to prevent upsetting the Mr. Merson-types. This is reminding me of that episode of The Office: "No, Mr. Spock was half human, half vulcan. We had to stop the quiz so I could go home and check."

Has the FA Cup (or the League Championship) ever been won by a team that does not play on the (main) island of Great Britain? With thought, I think I would have got that one. But I'd have struggled identifying Portsea as the third most populous of the British Isles. That involves a bit more of the old lateral thinking. There's a good outline of some of the distinctions at alt-usage-english.org/whatistheuk.html#gbWithin the British Isles (but outwith the United Kingdom), I've seen Torquay United at Cherry Orchard, Galway (on the rugby pitch) and Sligo. But I didn't see the 1997 friendly in Jersey - not part of the United Kingdom - which may or may not be counted as part of the British Isles depending on whether you're talking politics or geography (and even that leaves room for debate). Within the British Isles (and within the United Kingdom) I've chanced upon football in Orkney and Shetland. But don't go looking in the winter - it's a summer game in those parts! I've also encountered a few lunatics who've been to the Island Games - www.islandgames.net - Saaremaa v Åland or Greenland v Ynys môn anybody?

Put it this way....................if I was in a quiz team and was on the wrong end of an answer like that, I'd be demanding a "stewards' enquiry"

Still a good stat though. Slightly off topic, it will beinteresting to see if the FA Trophy leaves England for the first time this year with Wrexham
