Does anybody else remember Torquay v Brighton on January 1st 1997? Freezing cold day and an icy pitch. The game probably should have been postponed, but we won 2-1....our winner the result of defenders slipping on the icy surface. What I remember most about this game. ..other than the freezing cold,literally could not feel my fingers ...was the spirit of the Brighton fans who were jumping up and down chanting "You're better than we are."
I see Brighton are now headed to the Premiership whereas we are struggling to stay in the National League. Kudos to Brighton ....while Torquay fans can only wonder how it all went so horribly wrong.

Yes i was up there on that bloody freezing afternoon along with the other 2,500 plus to watch Rodney Jack and Co. Brighton were left well adrift at the bottom that afternoon but they somehow turned it around and managed to survive on the last day of the season and the rest is history as they say. |

There are lots of comparisons to make with the fortunes of other clubs. Roughly 8 years ago we beat Burton Albion on the last day of the season as they won the title and we claimed a play-off placenin the Conference. Whilst in League two, we handed them a 4-1 hammering at their ground.
Yet next season they could be 4 divisions higher than us.

I remember this one vividly as I watched the whole game from the Babbacombe end - in amongst the away supporters.
One of my mates from Uni was a big Brighton fan and came down for the game, so I decided to watch the game with him and his friends.
I remember that the game was almost a sideshow for the Brighton fans as there was constant singing and chanting about the evil Bill Archer who had parted the club from its historic home at the Goldstone Ground.
I clearly remember their passion and shared their pain.
I have always despised the kind of vultures who prey on football ground freeholds. I did before that day, but being with the Brighton fans really strengthened that feeling of loathing.
Clubs of the size of Brighton and Bristol Rovers are big enough to survive the pillage of the likes of Bill Archer and Clarke Osborne, serve a period in exile and recover.
Torquay United has more in common with Chester and Hereford. Fighting off Vaughan and Agombar saw the death of the limited companies that ran professional football in those cities, but the fact that the councils owned the grounds meant that professional football lived on - under slightly altered names.
I followed the progress of Chester and Hereford with great interest, partly because their fans are part of our "football family" but partly because I knew that one day it could be us.
At Hereford the disdain of supporters was not aimed at Agombar but at Keyte who delivered the club to Agombar.
At Torquay, I am still shocked and disgusted by the duplicity of Phillips, Balson and Kerswell who pimped round the Plainmoor freehold to property developers rather than allow the supporters the chance to save the club.

I still don't get it, ownership was handed to them for £1 as they were fans and could be "trusted" to look after the club. GI pulled out in July 16 as it was not viable to purchase the club without the freehold. Just after the fans forum where GI were not mooted as not the best of bedfellows, Plainmoor appears in the forward plan of the local authority. the one thing GI wanted to get involved with the club. Why do this if they were looking elsewhere to sell the club? |

I used to teach with Bill Archer's sister-in-law (Archer's brother and wife lived in Preston, Paignton, at the time).
She occasionally used to mention how beastly Brighton fans had been, and as a shy, newly qualified teacher, I didn't argue with her (because you didn't) but some people just do not get it.
