Dear Torquay United supporters,
On 1 December 2015, together with Shaun and Keira Roberts, I formed
Torquay United Fans Limited. This was with the intention of raising funds to launch a takeover bid for Torquay United. The three directors of the business were prepared to commit their own money as well as seek investment from our fellow supporters throughout South Devon and beyond.
My intention was not to become chairman, vice chairman or majority shareholder. I saw my involvement as being able to bring commercial expertise to a business which has consistently failed to maximise non-footballing revenue. I felt that, with over thirty years of business experience, I had much to offer the club. I was also confident I could build successful networks with all the wonderful people I have met through my lifelong support of Torquay United. They are amongst the best people I know.
I am now in a position to confirm two things.
Firstly, further to their announcement of 31 July, I can state that Mr and Mrs Roberts are no longer associated with Torquay United Fans Ltd. The appropriate paperwork regarding their resignations was filed with Companies House on 1 August 2016. I would like to thank Shaun and Keira for their support and wish them all the best for the future. I hope we see them at matches for years to come.
Secondly I am delighted to inform you that, after recent meetings with TUST, I will be giving my full support to the trust in order to secure the future of both TUFC and Plainmoor. This is based upon a shared vision that the future of the club lies safest in the hands of its supporters and the wider community.
This means I am now offering my help, as a supporter and TUST member, in assisting the trust with its fundraising activities. We do not know how much we may need to launch a successful bid for the club. Nor do we know when we may need to pull out all the stops. All I can do is to start immediately on making the local business community aware of what we are trying to do for our club. I am confident there are business people out there who share our dreams for seeing Torquay United back in the Football League. I'm sure they also believe in our vision of creating a more community-minded football club.
From my meetings with Michael Goulbourne I have gained a clear understanding of the principles of community ownership. I am also aware of the democratic principles which underpin the way TUST operates. If I eventually believe I can help by serving on the TUST board I shall put myself forward for election in the appropriate fashion.
It's a time for action. No looking back or recriminations. Together we can do it.
Up United!
