Towers joined Torquay in 1946. Why were we giving him a Benefit game in 1952 ? I thought back then, it was 10 years before you got a benefit game.
Possibly because he lost a lot of his football career in the army during WW2? Would have been 19 at the outbreak of war and 26 when he joined us so 32 for this game and maybe that age was deemed more important after 6 years of good service. Ironically, he did stay with us for another 4 years.
The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him.
Quite a few with less than ten years' service. Sometimes due to careers ended by injury (Adlington, Stocks, Hickman). Some just negotiated by the player as part of a contract package perhaps? Not sure.
Towers did eventually play just short of ten seasons for us.
Mentioned in the McDonough thread as signing for Dartmouth United in 1960 - just after his 40th birthday!
Towards the end of his time at Plainmoor was a part-timer as he qualified to become a teacher.
