A very good read but if my memory serves me correctly it was a certain Mr Pearson who saved them last year but I may be wrong.

Would I be correct in saying that Kevin Nicholson has a chance to become a proper legend, up there with Stubbs, Bettany, Hill etc. First of all a long and successful career as a player, then perhaps he is embarking on another equally successful career as manager. I think only Eric Webber comes close and don't think he played as many games but certainly managed the most for Torquay. He got one promotion. Would be interesting to know how many games Webber was involved in (player or manager) and see Kevins running total.

Where does Frank O'Farrell fit with the above analysis!

Gateman, I was thinking as a player AND manager.

Colin Bettany...what a legend! The original uncompromising full back. Remember when he got booked for arguing with a lady in the crowd who took exception to his physical style if play.Early 60s I think. His language would have made a fisherman blush. Suggest Tommy Northcott and Ernie Pym (whitest legs in the country) also be added to the legends list.

What a strange feeling - I am actually looking forward to Saturday's visit to Plainmoor.
A nice stress-free football match, followed by a free curry.
Kevin Nicholson has done a remarkable job in totally revamping the playing squad and transforming the atmosphere around the club on incredibly limited resources.
The board also deserve huge credit for selecting an intelligent and forward-thinking manager and even more so for standing by him as his efforts did not show the immediate turnaround that some appeared to expect.
We were in a rotten state when Nico took over. Polishing the turd would have probably given a short-term quick fix, but you would still have been left with a turd. You might be able to flog a dying horse over the finishing line from six games out - but from 33 games out that will not work.
It was a brave decision to perform massive surgery mid-season, but the bigger gamble would have been not to perform massive surgery. There was no risk-free easy option that could have been taken.
The fans also deserve massive credit. The number of fans who continued to turn up regularly through desperate times is quite remarkable. The patience, support and encouragement offered to a young team when it was low on confidence played a huge part in turning our fortunes around.
Let's all enjoy the day on Saturday. We can start worrying about next season on Sunday.

Yes Jon, It has been tough and I echo your summation of the season and Nico's achievements. Despite appalling luck with injuries etc we have escaped. Well done to Nico and the board.

Is there a thread on here for "Torquay legends"? If not, perhaps there should be.
As I sit in my study I have in front of me a TUFC team photo of 1954-55 season. In my mind most of that team are legends. Apart from Eric Webber, there are Ronnie Shaw (Torquay's answer to Stanley Mathews!), Sammy Collins and Don Mills, just to mention three. There are others from that era, such as Tommy Northcott and the Calland brothers.
Ah! Happy Days.
I was one of the few privileged supporters who witnessed the legendary FA Cup draw at Leeds United. (We lived at Nottingham at the time, so it wasn't that far to go). A day I'll never forget.
There aren't too many ex players of the modern era we could add to that list, apart from the ones mentioned in previous posts. One that comes to mind is Jimmy Dunne and don't forget Tim Sills. It's funny how some things stick in the mind. The memory of the goal he scored at the play-off final is as strong today as it was then. That fantastic cross from Wayne Carlisle, right on Sills head as he charged up field.
As for who will be in the squad next season, I suppose a lot will depend on what the new owners will be prepared to spend on wages, and which, if any of the 6 loan players will be available. Obviously MacDonald, Young, Butler, Berry and Moore would be a nucleus, and I can't see Port Vale letting Smith go. But how many of the others are really good enough for a promotion push? Let's hope decisions about the manager and budget are made sooner rather than later so we can get a squad together in time for them to gel before the season starts.
Hopefully, see you all tomorrow. My health has not been too good for this season, so have not seen many games. (Unfortunately one of them was the infamous 7 - 3 defeat!) It's a 80 minute drive down from N. Devon and back. Driving back after a game like that is not much fun. Win or lose tomorrow I'll have a smile on my face.

Is there any chance the new owners will introduce themselves at tomorrow's final home game of the season?
