It is ironic that Torquay United’s last Football League match against Gateshead took place at Plainmoor on Saturday, 23 January 1960.
At the time Torquay were third in division four and they finished the season in that position, thus securing promotion for the fist time in their history.
For Gateshead the season ended in disaster as they were unluckily voted out of the Football League to be replaced by Peterborough United.
Torquay beat Gateshead 1-0 with a goal from Graham Bond to complete the double, having won 2-0 at Redheugh Park in September during a run of five successive away victories. A one goal defeat was not too bad for Gateshead as they failed to win an away league match during the 1959/60 season.

It is interesting to read Eric Webber’s notes as he refers to sixteen year old goalkeeper Bill Glazier, having had two games with the reserve team.
Glazier did not play in Torquay’s first team but joined Crystal Palace in October 1961. He was an ever present in Palace’s side during the 1963/64 season, in which the Eagles secured promotion to Division 2 as runners-up to Coventry City.
In October 1964, the manager of Coventry City, the late Jimmy Hill, signed Glazier for a then-record fee for a goalkeeper of £35,000. During his time at Highfield Road Glazier made 346 league appearances, most of which were in Division 1.
He also made 3 appearances for England Under 23 and one for the Football League XI. For Torquay United, a case of the one that got away!
In the final paragraph of his notes, Eric Webber expresses his gratitude to the match ball donor, Mr Gil Standley, and is hoping to find a donor for the next home match!
The match ball donation scheme was introduced by Eric Webber to assist Torquay United financially, and I attach a copy of his programme notes for the opening match of the 1961/62 season against Crystal Palace. The cost of a match ball then was £6 and it is interesting to note further in the programme that the three prices for season tickets were 7 gns, 6 gns and 4½ gns, respectively! What are the costs of today’s match ball and a season ticket for 2015/16?
