On the other forum there is a thread about fans getting hit by flying balls (see Hancox moment of glory!). The thread has wandered off into the past and there is a query about a goal scored by one of our players at the Babbacombe end over half a century ago!
I know that goals at either end are quite rare now but in the old days those who are old enough to remember will know that they were regular occurrences so, to help narrow it down just a tad here is what I remember:
A clearance from the opposing goalie (it might have been a goal kick) struck the head of one of our players who was slow in getting back after an attack. He was knocked out so he missed the celebrations as the ball rebounded as if from a snooker table cushion straight back past the demoralised goalie and into the goal.
I was at the game and I thought that it was Gordon Astle but Wivelgull states that it was Ray Spencer (his only home goal for us was in the FA cup against Harwich and Parkeston on 4th November 1961). I am sure that our player was at or near the edge of the Babbacombe end area, over towards the old main grandstand but Wivelgull places it nearer the halfway line so there is some confusion about this incident.
Apologies if this has been aired before and I haven't picked it up but who can clarify what happened?
Update: It seems that Wivelgull and I are on about different incidents as his didn't result in a goal judging from the fact that he now quotes his incident as being during a 0 - 1 defeat (v York on 17/4/64) , mine definitely ended up as a goal for us and, I am pretty sure, was a fair time before 1964!
