Funny to think that up until a few weeks ago we had two survivors of the 1989 match at the club - both Deano and Kenny now departed.
A chance for Nico to watch from the touchline, those most bemoaning his absence are those who were most bemoaning his presence in the team - strange that. We will miss his hands-on experience nursing the youngsters through the game.
I have a feeling that Basingstoke may not be as bad as their league position suggests. Too many draws but a good one recently at post-Nico Bath sandwiched between two good wins in the FA Cup. Finished third last season.
We should win if we keep up the improvement shown since Nico arrived, but no room for any complacency.
Do we drop Butler back into Nico's place or move Nathan Smith over?
If Hickford were still around, I would do the latter. Is Exodus fit yet? He would replace Nico's experience, but I am nervous of having him in the back four even if 100% fit rather than 70%. I would be surprised if Gerring or Odofin started.
If Butler does drop back, I wonder if we might go for a narrower midfield diamond with Richards at the base, Briscoe at the tip and Carmichael (if fit) or Fenwick alongside Heslop.
I would not have both Shep and Briscoe wide in a 4-4-2 - not enough midfield muscle - so the alternative would be to push a central midfielder out wide.
If Butler were kept left midfield, I would expect Shep to start wide right in place of Hurst.
Seven on the bench - so that will stretch our resources to the limit!

So, another one of those seemingly life changing moments coming up. We know these can be life changing moments...just ask that lot up the road!
I don't have a good feeling about this one so will be happy with a 0:0 draw. Big Ex is rumoured to be fit again (maybe that's why i'm not feeling that confident about this match) and may find his way into the team now that Nico has played himself out of contention. As Jon says above, there could be a bit of chopping and changing of players due to suspensions etc. so it's fingers crossed and trying not to fart too much in the bath for me!
On a lighter and somewhat sadder note, last week I bought a beautiful Springer Spaniel Bitch, to go with my four Border Collies. For some inexplicable reason though, my wife is allergic to her...so she has to be re-homed! I know this is not a re-homing site but any sort of help will be greatly appreciated. Her name is Carol and she is sixty!

I cannot see how you could play Exodus and Nico in the same back four, but with Nico out Exodus may well get the call. His mobility is a liability, but at least with MacDonald and Smith either side and Richards in front he has a bit of protection. Most likely lineup would then be: Fabian Spiess Durrell Berry Angus MacDonald Exodus Geohaghon Nathan Smith Shepherd Murombedzi Simon Heslop Courtney Richards Dan Butler Tyrone Marsh Alex Fisher subs: Dan Lavercombe Ben Gerring Oneil Odofin (or Carmichael if fit and available or Campion if registered) Bayan Fenwick Sam Chaney Ashley Yeoman Louis Briscoe

I'm sure I saw it somewhere that Ex was fit again, but if he isn't, would Nico put Ben Gerring there for such an important game?
Oh damn, I've just seen that one of our ex players (Macklin) plays for Basingstoke...well, we'll need to score at least two to win then!

Regarding the opening paragraph, on the plus John Uzzell - a survivor of that day - can be still be found at Plainmoor on match-days working for the Press Association.

So Fenwick and Shepherd on the wings with Butler dropping to left back. Otherwise, it is as you were! Happy with that.

Two down at half time - need to take our chances which is the difference!
Off to walk my spaniel to clear my head!

Surely nobody sees this as a shock scoreline

Surely nobody sees this as a shock scoreline Well after the slight inprovements in recent weeks, this scoreline is a bit of a surprise to me. However today the team's frailties really surfaced again. We lost to a well organised and, in some cases, experienced side. Toothless up front and for all our possession and chances, we were never going to score. Heslop's foul throw late in the game summed it all up. More FA cup money thrown away in a season we need it more than ever.

I would be tempted to offer to take the spaniel off your hands but know the sheer amount of exercise they need and the extra mess may lead to my wife to look to 're-home me !

Happy to be on the train home after an absolutely pitiful performance from us imo. I know we are where we are but this is ridiculous. Lightweight everywhere and definitely conference south bound ! Wild horses wont be dragging me up to Altrincham next Saturday.

Been out working so only just seen the result. Does this mean we are a one-man team; without Kev we can't even get a draw against the team at the the bottom of the division below us? Surprised? Not really. Bitterly disappointed? Yes I am.
After 50 years of frequent disappointment I would never have forecast that we would drop to such a low point. Unfortunately I don't think we have yet reached our nadir.
