After an eventful off season we start the new season exactly how we ended the previous with a home game against Macclesfield! On that occasion, a draw was enough to deprive them of a play off berth and as such will be a good test to see where we are as a side. Not that there are too players left from those starting elevens as seen HERE Possibly only Briscoe will start in two consecutive league games for us. As for Macclesfield only five players remain from their side ( Squad list ) with Fairhurst being a notable mover to us after scoring 10 times last year. Possible star player for them is Danny Whittaker although at 34, may be past his best. But they will possible have gelling issues as well. Recent signings include midfielder Danny Whitehead from West Ham, William Boyle on a youth loan from Huddersfield as well as re-signing Tony Diagne on loan from Lincoln Really hard to assess where we are as a side and how we will line up with only one fit wing back and regular winger. Suspect the following players will start - Spiess, Geohaghan, Smith, McDonald, Butler, Fenwick and Fisher. If 4-4-2 or similar as it stands, Briscoe could potentially move out to the wing and Fairfurst start in the hole with Richards and Shepherd making up the XI. Would not be totally surprised if Hurst is declared fit though...

That is my gut feeling as well but Chaney may have a chance of making the bench! Bizarrely, the Herald Express pod cast went for a 4-3-1-2 system which is a amalgam of the two systems we have played during pre-season. Similar players but with Smith and Butler as full backs although Butler may end up more as a wing back and with Shepherd coming in for Richards but on the right of a midfield three! Otherwise same as above.
Certainly, quite difficult for the Macclesfield manager to prepare for this match.

So just one more sleep till the big day. The club have asked for realism and patience from the fans and they will certainly get that from me. We simply have to trust Cox with the small budget he has at his disposal. Could be a case of trying to identify who is playing for us tomorrow and in what position. Personally i am not overly optimistic. I think i would go along with what Paul Merson might say......if this team is outside the bottom four by the end of the month i will be majorly surprised Geoff...,,,majorly surprised.

So, here we go then, eyes down-look in ~ a new season is upon us! Personally, I think this is the best I've felt about a season since Buckle left! I also feel we will have a very similar time with this manager as we did with Buckle. This season we will just miss out on promotion ~ next season we will be promoted (albeit directly) ~ and the season after that some Bastard will steal our manager! Bristol Rovers will be looking for a new manager at that stage...I know that because they seem to get a new one every season!
I think we now have the type of no-nonsense manager we all hoped Hargreaves would turn out to be! Hargreaves could certainly Talk-The-Talk, but he couldn't do the other bit.
As for tomorrow. I think we will have to settle for a score draw! No clue who will score for us or them, other than the fact that there goal will come within the last ten minutes of the game! Some people are predicting crowds of 4000 odd...no chance...if we get 2500 I will be happy, that's certainly more than the 1800 that will allegedly see us break even.
As usual, I will be lying in a very hot bath listening to RD give an awful commentary on the match.
As a footnote...I believe that everything that Jon says is Gospel.

I will be looking forward to a hot bath! I am not there tomorrow as am on a 14 miles charity hike across Dartmoor from Princetown to Ivybridge. Hope the old legs keep up the pace! I concur with footnote. I never doubt anything Jon says. Indeed I am impressed, as these days I struggle to recall what happened last season but Jon effortlessly recalls events from 100 years ago!

Si it will take more than 3 points to cheer me up! It will help but it won't be enough, I'm taking a right pasting at the moment, probably a well deserved one but none the less it's painful! You have to wonder how the hell this Aussie side beat England 5-0 a year and a half ago, doesn't make sense!

I think a combination of home advantage and a number of your batsman being past their sell by date had made the difference. Nothing wrong with your bowling attack but they needs runs on the board to bowl at!

I don't know why but rarely have I looked forward to the start of a season so much. Maybe it's because I'm in for a tenner a month for the players fund, perhaps it's the work of the trust that I am a member of. I feel really involved and I feel that good forces are at work at the club. I am optimistic and I can envisage battling performances from the Gulls that will propel us into a promotion position. I reckon 12 points by the end of August starting with three today. I absolutely love going up Plainmoor.

I absolutely love going up Plainmoor. Quite right Sam. So do I. Not sure I am quite as optimistic about our prospects as you are though!

As has been said, we have options up front - Fisher may well start. We could also go for a 4-2-3-1 with Smith at right back and Murombedzi in for Courtney Richards (or possibly even Carmichael) with Briscoe left and Fairhurst just behind the centre forward. Or we could go for more of a 3-4-3 with Murombedzi and Briscoe (or Fairhurst or Marsh) either side of Quigley or Fisher.

Into the unknown - I cannot remember such an overhaul of players before the start of a season. The preparation has been as thorough as we could have hoped for in the time available and the management team have worked their nuts off to get t this point. I applaud them for that.
Whatever the result today I hope the supporters really encourage and get behind this young inexperienced squad after all were pretty fortunate to have any club to support at all.

As Peter, has just posted, never seen such an overhaul in in players.....but am sure they will do our great club proud over the season......the pessimists will be out in force no doubt after a few games if we make an indifferent start........good luck you gulls for this season, and go kick some booty.....cmon you yellows, show em what we made of......si
