So the final PSF at least for us fans with rumours of a behind closed doors match next Monday. What goes often comes around and it was a grand gesture from Exeter to waive their right to a share of the gate receipts, returning our favour to them during the Bateson era. Therefore your admission counts twice so make sure you come - even if you don't usually go to PSFs!!!
I think we may have seen the defence that will run out for our first league game against Exeter with the possible exception of Richards. I think a midfield triangle of Young, Kellerman and Fenwick represents a lot of talent and potential and will do well in the National League. The only area that we struggle is up front at present. Will we see someone new there! Maybe Joe Quigley who played against Yeovil on Tuesday. Will Fairhurst play - looks a tad short of match fitness...

Not too sure how we will line up tonight with those injuries. Both Briscoe and Chaney have played in that advanced midfield position and Richards could switch back to the centre but who will play at right wing back? Shepherd? Alternatively, if Topliss still at the club he could play here or in the centre. A 4-4-2 formation could see Briscoe and Shepherd on the wings which is a possibility.
Either way, not ideal preparations for the start of the season which is but a week away....

A morale boosting victory against local league opposition which looked extremely unlikely for the first quarter of the match. I walked in just in time to see Exeter had won the toss and elected to kick towards their own fans in the first half. Our lineup was different with Nathan Smith moving to right back in a back four which freed up Richards to partner Fenwick in midfield. Shepherd was on the right with trailist Ryan Brobbel, formerly of Middlesbrough on the left. Fairhurst was back to partner Briscoe up front.
Exeter came out of the blocks flying and I am not sure that we actually touched the ball before they scored! The ball was worked into our area and their striker held off McDonald? To slot the ball home giving new signing Spiess no chance! (Anyone else noticed that he has got pies in the middle of his name!) Exeter then continued to dominate to the delight of their support as we chased shadows and were lucky that they didn't score another 2 or 3 goals! Their best chance came with a one on one but Spiess very deftly held onto the ball as their striker tried to go round him.
However, we then had the best move of the match which led to the goal and changed the whole dynamics of the game. Butler started things off with a good run starting in our half and was able to lay the ball off to the feet of Fairhurst with his back to goal and just outside the area. Using good strength to hold off the defender his was able to lay it off to Brobbel on the left wing. A quick run towards the by line and his cross just had enough on it to evade the defenders to reach Shepherd just beyond the far post, a quick chest down and his volley was fired into the top right hand corner. Top quality stuff and the type of shot that is often shot well over the bar.
We then gave as good as we got for the rest of the half, I think Richards had a shot just outside the area which wasn't far over and of course Exodus's throw in's are like set pieces in themselves which will always give you a sniff!
Again in the second half, things were fairly even and noticeable that our fitness held up well and it was the Exeter boys that seemed to come off worse in the tackle as we seemed to want things more. Our winner when it came was a heavenly combination between the "bible boys" Exodus and Malachi with the latter just come on! A long throw from you know who was glanced home to thunderous appreciation from the home support. Exeter were very unlucky nor to equalise though when through on goal their striker ferociously volleyed to the far post which most thought was in only to see it ricochet off the post.
So a good day for me with a local Derby win to go with the Ashes Test win and maybe will put an extra few hundred on the gate next Saturday! Lots of pleasing points for me. First our fitness held up well with Briscoe in particular running for the full 90 minutes. His partner Fairhurst will be a thorn in a lot of sides but had a knock earlier in the week and perhaps not yet at optimum fitness. Next, a change in formation that worked with plaudits going to young Nathan Smith who grow into his new role and gives the side that extra adaptability.
Fenwick for me is a class act and without Young took over the leadership role very well in this area. Not the finished article and not everything came off but an excellent prospect. Brobbel in the first half particularly looked good and would be a good complement to Shepherd on the other wing and of course combined well together for the goal. First chance that I have had to see Shepherd and really liked what I saw and would be a pity if he doesn't play much due to a preference for the wing back system. Finally, Spiess had a very good match and cane through some testing situations which may be enough to earn him the number one berth this season. ..

Thanks for the report rjd. Good result and encouraging performance. According to the other site, exeter now trying to sign Brobbel! Not sure if there is any truth in that but he appears to have shown up well last night. If anybody is still wavering on whether to contribute to the player fund- sign up now!!

Bristol - would be galling if that was the case, particularly being short of a winger!
Si - that should cheer you up for a bit!!!

link - praise form Cox for his makeshift side on Friday, particularly for Spiess who kept us in it during a very testing first half!
