Well played pommies! Matilda's couldn't beat Japan, they were too good on the day, hoping England can win now we're out. You got the japs next, it'll be a tough one.

Bit of reaction for what is only the third time that an England team has got to the semi final stage of a football world cup. link1link2Stewart - as it happens only England who are sixth in the world are outside the top four rankings in the semi finals so hasn't worked out too badly in giving the best teams in the world a chance to get through to the latter stages. |

It is truly remarkable how history has repeated itself. In 1990 England's men were the better team in the semi final against Germany, but they were robbed by a fluke of a goal when Paul Parker deflected a free kick over Peter Shilton.
A similar thing has happened tonight, and England's women are justifiably devastated by that last minute own goal by Laura Bassett. For someone who has supported women's football for over 40 years, I am so disappointed by the outcome of this match. England were the better team and did not deserve to lose like that, much less seen the looks of delight on the faces of the Japs after the match.
If I were Mark Sampson, I would not have shaken the hand of the Jap manager, but rather have punched him on the nose after his boast that his players were superior to ours. At least that arrogant bastard will be silenced when his team are thrashed by the USA in the final.

Yes, very unlucky, freak goal after being the much better team, hitting the woodwork twice and their keeper pulling off a couple of very good saves in the second half to keep them in it while they offered very little in our final third.
That is the unpredictability of football and we can go out with our heads held high although still have a very tough third place play off against a very good German side at 9pm on Saturday....

Match is scoreless at the end of 90 minutes - we have stood toe to toe with the Deutsche - just hope it doesn't go to penalties!!!!

Well, there was one penalty - to England to break the deadlock.
This was a massive result against the top ranked side in the world - this is our first international win over Germany at the 21st time of asking!!!!
Well done to the Girls! Very satisfying to see them pick up the bronze metal!

Excellent performance by England in finally overcoming their long time nemesis. The decision to press their opponents high up the pitch was crucial, as it denied Germany any chance to get their passing game together. The tactics and formation determined by Mark Sampson in that match were spot on, although I do have one criticism of his team selection. The pace and control of Eni Aluko made a huge difference when she came on in the last match, and she really should have featured much more in the competition.
Tonight's final was a strange match. During the first half the USA showed why they are the best women's team of all time, and quite understandably they eased off in the second half and allowed Japan to display their own skills, although the result was never in doubt. England really deserved to beat Japan in the semi final, but I don't think they could have coped with the USA given the events of the first twenty minutes tonight.
I find it very curious that the top two nations in women's football, USA and Japan, are so committed and successful, whereas their male counterparts do not regard football as their major sport and are therefore well down the pecking order in the rankings.
Having said that, I am still extremely irritated by the fact that American players still refer to the game as "soccer", and their own stupid game as football. This is a game in which one player throws a rugby ball to another player who tries to catch it and run beyond the goal line, while all the other players wrestle each other to the ground. No player ever kicks the ball, so how can that be called football ?
Enjoyable tournament though, England definitely on the rise.

Ah (to digress) but Soccer is probably the right terminology, as it comes from Association Football. This was to distinguish the game for Gentlemen {now} played by Thugs as against the Game for Thugs played by Gentlemen - Rugby Football.
The 'soccer name died out over here probably because the Football bit was dropped by the egg-chasers.
American Football's rules have changed over the years, just like our ball sports and may have had more footwork involved rather than Punts and Conversions.
I could move on to why Rugby's 'Try' is so-called (points to the Football element in its genesis) but I'll get even more boring ...
I'll probably get corrected on all this but it's my inderstanding.
Anyway - the Yanks have Fall right, cos we switched to Frenchie Autumn. Just don't get me started on some of their regional accents (ooh it hurts!!).

In the very early days, association football became shortened to 'assoc', in the way rugby football became 'rugby', which gave birth to the slang words 'soccer' and 'rugger'. 'Soccer' and 'fall' are probably the only time that Americans have actually used English words in the correct context. Their education system is so poor, you end up with a generation that thinks and talks like this: |
