I wonder if anyone else was down at the Recreation Ground on a very hot afternoon in 1976 to witness the ball being smashed to Torquay railway station and beyond by Clive Lloyd, Vivian Richards and co. I can remember getting the signatures of some of those legends...

Yes,I was there. Very entertaining it was too. In the middle of the school holidays i had been up to Plainmoor the evening before to watch us beat Exeter 2 1 in the South West Holiday Trophy. Clive Lloyd and co seemed like giants to us lads desperate to get their autographs the following afternoon. Just ten days later i was off to my first ever Torquay away game along the coast at Bournemouth in the league cup......happy days.

Who knew! Not me for sure. I would be there like shot these days. Even if I had known, I suppose being only 19 in the 'long, hot summer' of '76, the draw of bikini-clad holidaying females, not much more than a '6' away from the Rec, was much stronger than watching what I then considered to be 'boring old cricket'.
I bet it was bloody brilliant!

I'd seen the West Indies play Yorkshire at Abbeydale Park, Sheffield earlier that summer.
By August I was toiling away in a summer job at William Hill overlooking the post office roundabout in Torquay. A curious experience. Not much football betting in those days. Mainly horses and dogs. Fascinating mix of punters; especially busy during the Glaswegian fortnight which was something of an "event" in the Torquay of the 1970s.

I was there I was also there and what is slightly worrying is that I must have been stood next to Stuart at some point as I also got the autographs of Holder, Daniel, Julian (but not Gill), Frederick and a few others. Heaven knows what happened to my autograph book as it also contained the autographs of Stirling Moss and Stan Mortensen from what must have been a truly bizarre Sunday afternoon visit to some place in Paignton sometime in the 70's.

I didn't see the 1976 game ( new baby!) but was at the Minor Counties game. I was supposed to be helping my dad while he did the commentary by fetching food and drink as required. However the powers that be (were ?) decided it would be totally inappropriate for a female to be that close to the Windies dressing room as some of them might be in a state of undress. Alvin Kallicharran looked most disappointed.
