The Halifax centre-half would go on to manage Blackpool - dramatically hauling them from the lower reaches of the table into the play-off positions - only to lose at Wembley on penalties. I was there!

My word this 1981 Halifax Town programme looks uncannily familiar. I'm sure any resemblance to Torquay United's programmes of the same era is purely coincidental. Surely there should have been an Alan Merson column? Nice to see, however, that Dave Hepworth of Ellacombe Church Road is advertising his wares.
Player Parade: Dave Harris. What a marvellous timepiece and reflection of the tastes of over thirty years ago. Not that I had too much in common with Mr Harris.

I was going to say something similar - and that is the resemblance to the Torquay programme of the same time. Whilst there were many template kits during that era - especially Bukta and Umbro - during that era, so there were with programmes. Much of the content of the programmes at the time, were generic - I remember the Torquay programme regularly featuring a column by Simon Inglis - now I seriously doubt he wrote just for us - that no doubt appeared, at times in the Halifax, and whoever else the same company published them for. What I will say for the programmes of that era, is that considering they are 35 years old, they stand up well against even today's issues. The certainly deteriorated for a while.

The resemblance to Torquay United's programmes of the same era is certainly no coincidence. For the season 1980/81, and most of 1981/82, the programmes for Halifax Town and Torquay United were printed by Duplex Lithgo Press Ltd, Newton Abbot. During this period the company also printed the programmes for Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle and on reviewing the TFF Programmes Room I see they also supplied programmes for Bury and Crewe Alexandra. Several years ago I remember reading an article stating that in the early eighties, Duplex Lithgo Press Ltd, printed programmes for several football league clubs. Unfortunately, the company were placed in the hands of a receiver and the programme for Torquay's home match with Hartlepool United on Saturday, 13th March 1982, was printed at short notice by Kingfisher Print and Design Ltd, of Staverton. One of the partners at Kingfisher was Derek Bellotti, Torquay United's reserve team player-manager at the time. The company only set up business one month earlier. I quote from Business Manager Alan Merson in the programme:- "As the recession bites even harder, Duplex Lithgo Press Ltd., our Match Magazines printers, were put into the hands of a receiver and manager recently and on Friday last the decision was made by the receiver that the firm would be shut down forthwith. Much publicity had been made of the fact that the company had been sadly hit by the drop in attendances at football matches which resulted in a drastic drop in orders from the 16 Football League clubs they printed for. I would like to state quite clearly that at all times we at Torquay United have always been prompt payers though I believe that this hasn't been the case with some of Duplex's customers. I would like to pay tribute to the tremendous service and co-operation that we have always received from Duplex. They were real experts in their field and football clubs will be the losers following their collapse."
