Here's another from the 1905 Torquay Times series of local football celebrities. TT 15/12/05 Kember was Rev Percy Baker's right-hand man in promoting soccer as good for the soul of working class men in Ellacombe. He had studied at Exeter College, Oxford and Ridley Hall, Cambridge. Luscombe, in typical Luscombe style, describes him as an "Oxford blue", but I doubt very much if that is true. There is a well-known apocryphal story about St John at Liverpool. I can imagine a banner at Ellacombe Church proclaiming "What will you do when Crad comes?" and somebody scrawling underneath "move Kember to inside right". Although an Ellacombe man, Kember made a few appearances for Torquay United in 1904. He scored against St Sidwell's United (whatever happened to them?) at St James Park. He played for champions Ellacombe against the Rest of the League XI at the Rec and then stayed on the pitch to play another ninety minutes and score twice for United against HMS Northampton.
