Some of the younger members, may think that all the old ones on here and yes I put myself in that club, might struggle to remember their days at primary school. I'm hoping we can get some great stories of your memories of the time you had at primary school, not just our older members, but members of all ages.
It must have been the year 1959 that I first walked through the gates of Milber Primary School at Buckland Newton Abbot, I'm not going to pretend I remember that day, because I can't no matter how hard I have tried.
There are events and friends from my days at primary school I do remember and for me it was a happy time being at school.I do remember having to sit down and do my times tables, I must confess I was always good at doing them, but my reading was not so good and I had to work hard at improving it.
One thing that shows how the world has changed and not for the better in my view, was how the girls did P.E. They had to do it in their navy blue knickers, something that would never be allowed these days. Yet I do not remember ever looking at the girls in their knickers and getting sexual thoughts, to see them like that was just normal, no fuss was made and why should there be.
Country dancing was part of the learning, mind you I did love doing that, so I find It strange I have never fancied doing line dancing. I do know a few line dances, but only because in some hotels, I used them to get people up from the chairs on to the dance floor.
The dreaded prick, you know the ones that you had to line up for, the school nurse was in school to give to some jab or other. One made six holes in your arm, not sure what it was for now, but as boys you had to be brave and say it never hurt me.
Milber school always had a great school summer fete in the large school field, I really loved the fete and my job was on the bike track. Those who were the lucky ones would bring their bikes to school on the fete day. A small track was set up with tape and then a charge was made to anyone wanting to have a bike ride.
As most kids never had a bike in those days, it was always busy, the best most kids had was a trolley. Do you remember them? you got some wood and then searched for some old wheels of a pram, then you built you own trolley. How many times did I nearly get killed as I went down the big hills around Buckland, on the machine that had no breaks.
I loved all my friends at primary school, the boys were all real boys and climbing trees on the way home from school was always a must do for the boys. Yes I had the odd fight, even over a girl once, but all the kids at the school all lived close by, so we were so much more in each other life's. Not the same today with kids traveling miles to go to a chosen school, rather than the one where they live.
My first love was Julie Robbins, the head girl and the local policeman's daughter, my own Emma Pele, well thats what she looked like to me. The only girl I ever got the cane for, later at Highweek Boys school, I was to get that thing often, hard across my backside.
You see I wanted to show my love to my Julie and against all rules, I went out the school at lunch time. I was off to the local sweet shop as they had rings for 6d, big money that would have got me a large bar of chocolate. But no, chocolate was not important, showing Julie I loved her was.
I went with another boy and we got caught, together we stood outside the head masters office, two ten year olds. My mate was in tears and then we were both matched in, my mate kept saying sorry, but we still both got six of the best.
I found a photo on Friends reunited, I do not know why I'm not on it as it was my class at school. I can remember some names and will put them here, just in case you may know any of them, yes my Julie is on there, she went to grammar school and wanted to meet me a few years later, in the bus station.
Well she turned into a bloody giant looking down on me, no way could I reach to kiss her like I once used to do, so I did not meet here every again.
