I am indebted to my friend Mike Griffiths (record Devon appearance holder) who has sent me a handbook for the above league. Some real old names crop up, some I've never heard of. Torbay All Blacks playing at Ilsham Valley, Bookers playing at Barton Downs, Gartrells at Cricketfield, Rockheys at Stoodley Knowle, V.I.V.O United (who the hell were they) at King George V to name but a few. 23 teams in total. I once played a season for Coverdale United, long gone. This was a good league but it seems to have struggled of late with it actually disappearing for a while. Seems completely dominated by pub sides now. I remember Tom Cobley playing Gerston at Queens Park around this time and I think the attendance was about 2000.
We were chatting about local football recently and the Cup Final between Cobley and The Gerston came up. Those of you old enough may remember Brian Carter, who I played with at Paignton United in the early 70's. Brian wrote a piece for the Herald Express about that game, played at Queens Park, and attended by several hundred. I personally played in 2 finals, for Torbay International against Four Seasons, managed by Mike Douglas, who included Mike Griffiths, Tommy Holland, Paul Chalker, Paul Edwards in what was a very good side. The final was at Plainmoor. I also played for Torbay Reds several years later in a final at Wall Park, but can't recall the opposition. Local football back in those days was of a decent standard, with Upton, Newton Spurs, Newton Dynamos all prominent in County Cup competitions. On a personal level, I played at Brixham United in the Western League, Upton in the SDL and Dynamos in the SWestern League. We had some great times, though sadly we gave lost a few over the years, but it's always nice to reminisce. Graham Hull
