Well, England have now touched down in Brazil and have a nice gentle opener to kick off proceedings! Didn't have the best warm up match last night but looking ahead, a lot of these games do end up as draws with the fear of losing the opener perhaps making defence the priority?
Without knowing too much where each of the teams are in their group, initially half expected both of these teams to qualify to the knock out stages with a decent shout of making the quarters but see that Uruguay are the top ranked team - 7, compared to England - 10 and Italy - 9 suggesting a number of tight matches await which could go either way.....

I predict either 0-0 or either team nicking a late-ish winner, curteousy of either Sturridge or Balotelli. It won't be a great spectacle.

Nothing less than a draw will do. Lose the opener and we are absolutely up against it then. I don't think it will be a boring game either, especially if there is an early goal. I know I'm biased because I'm English but I feel we have a decent chance against Italy. I also think the Uruguay game will actually be the tougher of the two. Winning 'em both is the stuff of dreams but it is also achievable.

It could have been worse, however with Uruguay losing to Costa Rica, we are still right in it. If we beat Uruguay in our next game and Italy beat Costa Rica, which I would expect, a win over Costa Rica in our last game will see us through, no matter what happens between Italy and Uruguay. And after the way we played last night, I see no reason why we can't reasonably expect to beat both teams. For sure Italy are going to go far in this competition.

half fit suarez ripped a poor england side apart on his own,with a little bit of help from our shaky defence yet again.I expect costa rica to turn us over as well,we are declining rapidly as an international team country,in the near future i see us even failing to qualify

Actually had to record this game and do a "likely lads" and try to avoid any hint of what was happening - not helped by neighbours shouting Yesss, Rooney! As I walked in the front door...
With Spain losing their first two, at least we are in good company and our situation is actually marginally better than theirs! Secondly, being a Torquay fan helps with the seemingly inevitable disappointment of watching an England side.

Well, well, well, England knocked out of the World Cup before they even reach the first hurdle...who'd a thought it?
Of course, whatever happens in life we have to take the positives out of any given shit situation. For me the positive side is ~ no more village idiots riding around with tattered English flags flying from their car windows! |

I had pretty slim interest in this WC until it actually started, and 9 days later that interest has been demolished. At least, after 50 years as a Torquay supporter, I am well used to disappointment. On a plus side, we should be spared ever seeing too-old, too-slow, past-his-sell-by-date, Gerrard in an England shirt again. It was obvious as the season wore on that he can't cut it at PL level anymore. A costly inclusion at international level, in my opinion.

Rooney can join him...he's scored his only WC goal now so let's get a striker who actually knows where the back of the net is on these big occasions!

Hmmm. And who might this striker be? Welbeck? Sturridge? Rooney's problem is he is so good and versatile, managers abuse his talent. I think that credit to him he gives it all in whichever position he is asked to play. He is still our only world class player. Before this comp Messi had 1 WC goal scored 8 years ago. Ronaldo has 2 goals in 2 previous world cups and none in this one. Are their fans or press clamouring to get rid of them? Of course not. Only in England would the press whip up such a load of old bollocks. |

Interesting statistics there Florida. Where England* are going to find a new striker I have no idea, maybe it's just because i'm old fashioned, but i like strikers who actually score goals.
* Zola Budd was South African and so was Graham Hicks ~ or was he Zimbabwean ~ one ran for England and the other played cricket for England. We have a guy in the England cricket team at the moment who was born in Australia!
Maybe it's time to look further afield for a new striker...where was Suares born!
