Well its my view that as fans of TUFC we are indeed very lucky and I will give my reasons why I feel that.
There has been talk on another thread about the real threat that Weymouth Town Football club, would be no more. The news a few weeks ago was about the possible take over of the club by Dorchester Town. A club struggling with very low gates, but one that would like to move forward if it could.
That possibility came to an end on Friday of last week, the owner of Dorchester does not have the funds needed to take over Weymouth and its fully dead in the water now.
All the land around the Wessex stadium has now been sold, the company who now owns it all, wants the plot in the middle, yes the Wessex stadium. Plans had been draw up by the Weymouth owner for a new stadium elsewhere in Weymouth, it would have needed the rugby club to be a part of it.
It seems the rugby club are saying they were never asked, but the real problem is the site chosen is an old tip and there is no chance of a new stadium being built there.
The Weymouth owner has made the money he wants and all he wants now is out of the club, one he took over only a year ago. If no buyer is found shortly, the whole club is being put into administration and that will be the end of Weymouth Town Football Club.
There is a small consortium, lead by a man who has been a major sponsor to the club for years, he loves the club and really wants to save it. The big problem is the current owner will not under write the debts the club has and that includes vat and many other unpaid bills.
The consortium could just about raise the money needed to take the club over, but really fear about how big the debts would be and that is why they look like they may have to end their interest in the club.
Very sad indeed and a club that may be gone very soon, due to the owner having no interest in the club, only what he was able to make for himself, he has done that and will leave Weymouth and the town will no longer have its club.
I know Merse will say its up to the locals to save it, but how? just how many will really care, the club has only been getting gates of 900 or less.If it happened here and the 2000 die-hards were asked to come up with a grand each to save the club, how many really put in any money, they sure would never see it again.
Seeing I ran a thread about how we would feel, if to save our club and history,we would have to Join Exeter, I asked in Weymouth today, their views on joining Dorchester.
It seems there is real dislike from both sets of fans, going back to the days they were in the same league. All I spoke with said they would rather lose the club for good than ever join Dorchester. There was talk about dropping down a league, in the hope that the club could afford to stay afloat due to lower player wages etc, but that now has also been given up as a way forward for the club.
We may have a few problems, we may have some who do not like each other, or get on that well, but we do have a solid board. One that has only the clubs interest at heart, will not be looking to make any money out of the club, but trying to make sure our club and its history will live on.
The mad events of this weekend need to be forgotten and moved on from, our posts should be about our games and our players, positive posts, because we are on an up, lets enjoy it, its far better than all those dark days we have all been through before.
