Brian Healy, I think, was an England C (or its equivalent) when he played for Morecambe, before joining us.

The late Ralphie Birkett springs to mind. Golfing buddy of my dads. Had the pleasure of a couple of drinks with him occasionally. Loved his stories of life as a pro...

Moving on to players, with Torquay United connections, who have played for England C (and its predecessor teams) throws up all sorts of names. That's probably because games at this level have been used for a variety of purposes and sometimes tailored to the quality of the opposition. With the current emphasis on under-23 selection, it's probably a long time since one of these teams was made up of the very best of non-league footballers.
With this in mind I looked at the list in the most recent Non-League Directory in my possession. That's up to 2010 and includes Les Afful, James Bittner, Gary Brabin, Kieran Charnock, Roscoe Dsane, Mark Gardiner, Matt Green, Ben Harding, Karl Hawley, Brian Healy, Rossi Jarvis, Scott Laird, Adam Lockwood, Chris McPhee, Kevin Nicholson, Martin Rice, Mark Robinson, Tim Sills, Craig Stanley, Steve Thompson, Simon Travis, Ishmael Welsh and Nicky Wroe.
There you go. I may have missed one or two in the small print. Since 2010 the list wouldn't be too long because we're talking about young players. Looking in various places I can see just two: Brian Saah before he joined us and Angus MacDonald this season. Joe Oastler was named in a squad but I don't think he played. MacDonald, meanwhile, has just been included in the party to visit Slovakia and Hungary.

Harold Gough Jack Butler Dick Hill Dave Mercer Peter O'Dowd We've encountered these before but it's always the names of Hill and O'Dowd which make me stop and ask "who?" Dick Hill would have been coming up thirty-seven when he joined us in 1930. A Nottingham man, who'd played for Millwall, he moved on to Newark Town after leaving Plainmoor. Hill appeared more than 350 times for Millwall, mainly in Division 3(South) and made one England appearance - as a thirty-two year old third division player - in 1926. According to englandfootballonline.com Hill was one of six debutants that day in Antwerp. What, you wonder, was that all about? The centenary history records that Peter O'Dowd joined us from Chelsea in March 1937 after a spell in France. England Football Online implies he moved to Torquay United directly from Valenciennes. The book says he played seven league games before finding "his style of play was totally unsuitable for the rigours of third division football". The website reckons (less convincingly) that he broke his leg in a trial match. Wiki also mentions the break. There's a lot of conflicting information around; O'Dowd may have even been a draper in Weybridge at one time. He played three times for England and had cost Chelsea a tidy sum when he signed from Burnley.

John Knapman and Ian Twitchin .... England Amateur Youth The important thing about Knapman and Twitchin is that they did it as our players. The number of players who have won age group international honours before, during or after their time at Plainmoor probably runs into dozens and dozens if not three figures. The rate would have increased recently with all the loanees and the greater range of age groups from U16 through to U21. By my reckoning (thanks to Wiki which needs to be treated with caution), even in as season as bad as last, we had eleven players who had represented their countries at age group level: Kevin Nicholson, Aaron Downes, Krystian Pearce, Billy Bodin, Nathan Craig, Tom Cruise, Aiden O'Brien, Adebayo Azeez, Anthony O'Connor, Connor Thompson and Shaquille Coulthurst. And you want a full international? Wiki maintains that Enoch Showumni played two internationals for Nigeria.

Will there be players to add to this thread this season?
Our players are now eligible for England C which is essentially a non-league under 23 XI. I would imagine we have several candidates for the games against Estonia (away) in October and Turkey (home) in November.
No news yet of the venue for the Turkey match. Plainmoor would be most suitable.
